William Richard Onyon

July 29, 1930 — July 4, 2017

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of beloved Father, Husband, Grandfather, Brother and Friend, William R. (Bill) Onyon, on July 4, 2017.
Bill was born on July 29, 1930 to William H. and Viola Onyon. He lived his whole life in the Salt Lake Valley surrounded by the mountains he loved and admired. He attended Highland Park Elementary, Irving Junior High and South High School. He studied art under LeConte Stewart and Arnold Friberg at the University of Utah and graduated with a degree in Journalism.
He married Madge Price in 1955 and they had a happy marriage that produced two children, Sean and Amanda. Madge passed away in 1983.
Bill was a gifted writer and artist, enjoying a long career in graphic design and advertising. He worked for David W. Evans, Inc. Advertising for 40 years and at Bailey & Montague for 10 years before retiring. He is best known for designing the Maverick Country Store logo, which became a recognizable brand throughout the west. In retirement he became a prolific painter producing countless canvases of family members and his much loved western landscapes.
Bill was blessed with not one but two loving marriages and is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years Carol, who gave him such tender care. He is also survived by his children: Sean, Amanda and Jenny, his Grandchildren: Riley, Hilary and Chloe and his sister Eleanor.
For all his gifts and talents, Bill was ever humble. He possessed a great warmth and kindness, always seeking to encourage and lift people up. We will miss his intelligence and wisdom and his curious, adventurous, fun-loving nature.
We would like to extend special thanks to Erika Espinoza, Heidi Webber and Lily Peralta for their exceptional and loving care of Bill at the end of his life.
