William John Sprunt

September 17, 1931 — January 14, 2021

William John Sprunt was born on September 17, 1931 in Salt Lake City, Utah to William Handy Sprunt and Clarissa Olive Scofield Sprunt. William, known to all as ‘Jack’ was the third child in a family of five. He grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from East High School in 1948, and attended the University of Utah, where he met his future bride, Lois Coombs. They both left to serve missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jack served in the Great Lakes Mission, Lois in the Eastern States Mission. Upon returning from their missions, they enrolled at the University of Utah to finish their degrees. During his time at the University, Jack was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. They were married on August 5th, 1953. Shortly after Jack and Lois’s first son was born, Jack was drafted into the Army and after training, he was chosen from his platoon to serve as a clerk to the base Commander. He received an honorable discharge from the Army in 1957.
After returning from his service in the military, he began his career as an underwriter for Utah Home Fire. He also moonlighted as a bookkeeper and helped his sons with their paper routes for many years. He was no stranger to hard work as he provided for his family. Jack had such a strong work ethic and enjoyed working with people, even after his retirement he continued working as an independent until last year.
Lois and Jack were blessed with a large family, with six boys and 3 girls. Jack was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and held several callings in his lifetime. He and Lois served in the Salt Lake Inner City Mission and he served as a Bishop of the Cottonwood 11th Ward.
Jack enjoyed playing tennis and swimming. When his children were living at home, he enjoyed camping and family trips. He was an avid reader and had a habit of always reading two or three books at the same time. Jack always had several books scattered throughout the house that he was in the process of reading. He loved crossword puzzles and timed himself to see how quickly he could finish a puzzle.
Jack was a diehard fan of the University of Utah Utes and so was his family. He and Lois raised their family in the Federal Heights neighborhood, which was in walking distance to the stadium and his children have wonderful memories of attending the games with their dad. His traditions of season passes and attending the games continued up until just a couple of years ago.
He is survived by his sister, Jean Sprunt, his children, William Mark Sprunt (Patty), Jan Sprunt Prows (Jeff), Roger Craig Sprunt (Nelida), Michael John Sprunt (Mette), Michelle Sprunt Spence, Ginger Lynn Sprunt Baker (Brent), Matthew David Sprunt (Hollie), Thomas Alexander Sprunt (Whitney), Christopher James Sprunt (Eduarda).
He is preceded in death by his spouse, Lois, his parents, his brother Ronald and his sisters Wilma and Jane. Also proceeded him in death, his son-in-law, Michael W. Spence.
The family would like to thank Heartwood Hospice for the support and care given to him these past few months.
