Salt Lake City, Utah – William George “Bill” Cobler, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, cousin, and friend passed away on June 8th, 2022, at the age of 84, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born October 1st, 1937, to Esther Pearl and Samuel Markus Cobler. Bill met the love of his life, Margaret Svard, at the Pike in Long Beach, California, and they married on May 10th, 1962. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. They had six children: Tammy McGowan (George), William George Cobler, Duane Cobler, Lisa Copling (Todd), Darrin Cobler (Victoria), and Julie Cobler. They were also blessed with 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren that were their pride and joy.
Bill served in the United States Navy where he proudly protected those he loved and many others during the Gulf War in both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. He retired at the end of 1994 as a member of the VR-55 Squadron, where he was honored as Sailor of the Year. Bill was a hard worker often working multiple jobs to take care of the needs of his family. He worked as a civil engineer for most of his career at Hill Air Force Base before retiring. While working at Hill Air Force Base, he saved a woman’s life while she was choking
and he was presented with the Honor of Valor Award for his courageous act of heroism and bravery. He worked as a training lieutenant with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Department. He also worked security at Hogle Zoo and various other businesses for many years. Later in life, Bill worked for Thomas Travel and Delta Air Lines where he served travelers for almost 20 years before retiring. He finalized his work life at Maverik corporate offices. Bill had a great love for the scouting program and assisted many boys with accomplishing the requirements needed to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout. He was honored with the distinguished Silver Beaver Award for his service, dedication to the scouting program, and the community.
He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved to cook and could make any leftover look and taste like a gourmet meal. He loved to garden and had the most beautiful flowers and the tallest tomato plants, bearing the most delicious fruit, which he freely shared. Bill and Margaret went on several adventures that took them all over the world experiencing numerous memories with many of their children and grandchildren. Bill had a great love for his wife and family. Bill and Margaret were recently honored surrounded by their legacy as they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary.
He is preceded in death by his father, Samuel, mother, Esther, father-in-law, Axel, mother-in-law, Greta, infant brother Kenneth, brother Alvin, sister Susan, Uncle Irvin, and Aunt Florence. He is survived by his eternal companion Margaret, their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, and numerous other extended family and friends who loved him dearly.
Services will be held at Redwood Memorial Mortuary & Cemetery, 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah. The viewing will be held Saturday, June 18th from 9:00 – 10:45 a.m. followed by the funeral services at 11:00 a.m., and graveside dedication at 12:30 p.m.Service Information
