Willard George Jewett

May 13, 1929 — April 13, 2020

Willard George Jewett, age 90, passed away April 21, 2020 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born on May 13, 1929 in Payson, Utah to David Earl Jewett and Ina Reva Elison Jewett.
Willard married the love of his life, Alice Moore Jewett, on October 13, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a firm testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and was an active and faithful member of The Church. During his life he served in many callings in The Church including several Bishoprics and as Bishop of the Winder 10th ward. He enjoyed serving wherever he was called. Mom and Dad had four children Craig, Alan, Terry and Pam and loved life, family and friends together for the next 69 years. Dad was drafted into the U.S. Army three months after they were married and served for two years during the Korean conflict. He was a cook and worked in the mess hall at battalion headquarters. During part of that time Mom was able to live in California with him. To make it all work Dad would go to work on base at 4 am as a cook and work until noon and then go to a second full-time job and work until night, come home and say hello to Mom, go to bed and start it all over again the next morning. Dad and Mom became known for their weekend water fights. When Mom moved down, they bought two plates, two glasses, two sets of silverware a pot and frying pan and they made that work. Craig and Alan were born during that period of time.
After his military service Dad & Mom moved back to Payson where Dad started cutting meat for the local Safeway’s store. It’s was there he lost his first wedding ring in a batch of hamburger.
While living in a basement apartment Dad started building a home for his family. He would get up at 4 am, work on the house until 8, go to work for 8 hours and come back to the house and keep building. Mom would bring dinner over to him and he would work until 9 or 10 pm and go home and start over the next day. You can probably guess where he spent his days off. He built the house in 9 months.
Terry was born during this time. He was a lot younger then than he is now.
They weren’t there very long when Dad decided to begin a new career. He started selling Insurance in Nephi, Utah. His family was there for a year when Dad was transferred to SLC and they moved into their current home and they have been there ever since. Pam was born shortly after moving to SLC.
Dad was always the strongest dad in the neighborhood. He was also incredibly determined to make things work. He was successful in his business and selling. He worked long hours. He finished the basement in their home. They took their children on vacations, camping, Disneyland and many other locations over the years. Mom and Dad did their best to have a lovely home and provide many experiences for their children. Dad cut his son’s hair for most of his life, and neighbors and friends. He continued cutting hair until just 2-3 years ago.
His favorite song was “I’ve been working on the railroad”. He composed one poem that we’re aware of: Alan and Terry were his inspiration for this poem.
Dad got the boating disease and over a number of years they purchased three different boats. Our family went boating on many different lakes. One experience that we all remember was on Lake Powell when something went wrong with the boat and Dad spent a lot of time upside down with his feet sticking straight up out of the engine compartment. Mom said he was that way so long he sunburned his feet.
After his children were grown, Mom and Dad had either a 5th wheel or motor home for several years and spent time traveling with family and friends.
As time passed their children went to college, married, started their own families and they were blessed with 14 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. Dad/Grandpa was always eager to be with his grandchildren. Often traveling to see them and their parents. Playing, wrestling, swinging, eating ice-cream, talking (giving his lecture of the day), all the things that truly wonderful grandpas do.
Mom and Dad bought a second home in St. George about 8 years ago. It was a nice place to go, but hey really didn’t spend a lot of time there. Dad liked being home best.
Dad liked to climb on ladders and no pun intended, that was his down fall (several times over).
Dad has always been concerned about Mom and her welfare and wanted to make sure that she was taken care of while he was here and now when he isn’t. He also had one daughter and he was always concerned about Pam and grateful she had married a good husband.
Dad was always willing to serve and help no matter how difficult the task. Those who knew him knew that if you needed help you could call him at any time and he would come. He enjoyed great health during most of his life and if you asked him how he was doing he would say, “if I had it any better, I couldn’t stand it”. He was always ready for an adventure, to travel, boat, play with his grandchildren or to go for a bowl of ice-cream. We will all miss him.
He is survived by his wife Alice and children: Craig (Marilyn) Jewett, Alan Jewett, Terry (Pamela) Jewett, Pamela (Tom) Nead, 14 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren, his brother Duane Jewett and his good friend Wayne Janssen who all loved and adored him.
