Walter Lowell Fisher

September 22, 1937 — November 23, 2021

Walter Lowell Fisher, our quiet hero and champion, passed away at his home on November 23, 2021, just a few minutes after his sweetheart of 61 years kissed him goodbye. He was surrounded by his family when he passed.
Walter was born on September 23, 1937, in Salt Lake City to Merlin and Effie Fisher. He was number 11 of 12 siblings.
Dad grew up in playing sports, with special talent in baseball and football. He was always grateful for the support that he got from his parents and siblings. His father would often walk over two miles to watch him practice and play in games. He also had a special relationship with his mother, whom he adored. He knew that he was loved and safe. Their examples of service taught him lessons that lasted throughout his life. No doubt that the long-awaited reunion was very sweet.
He graduated from West High School. Not long after that, he served in the Army as a radio operator. He started work at Lawson Supply Company, which eventually lead to his career as a plumber. He worked for John Poulsen, The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, and then obtained his contractor’s license and formed S&W Plumbing.
While working at Lawson Supply, his friend set him up on a blind date with Shirlene Sorenson, who would soon after become his wife. They were married on May 5, 1961, in Salt Lake City. On June 26, 1969, they were sealed together, with four of their children, in the Salt Lake Temple. Shortly after that, two more children were born. Together, they created a home of unrelenting love, safety, and acceptance for their children, grandchildren, and anyone who entered. He freely sacrificed beyond measure for them without complaint. They celebrated their 60th anniversary this year.
Walt was a loving, supportive, and loyal husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, without any regard to their situation in life. Service was something he learned from his parents and was always seeking opportunities to help others. Watching his example taught us more than most sermons ever could.
He enjoyed making lasting memories with his family. Some were well planned, and others just happened. It included being outdoors fishing, camping, traveling, and simply having fun with his children. He enjoyed chatting with family and friends, well known for his sense of humor and a broad repertoire of jokes. If you had the opportunity to meet Walt, you became his friend for life.
Walt was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed assignments where he could “work behind the scenes.” His favorite callings were librarian and assistant clerk. He attended the temple regularly with his wife and son Wayne.
Walter is survived by his wife of 60 years, his six children, Lauri Rainey (Kris), Bart Fisher (Brenda), Shelli Moore (Chuck), Daneen Nolte (Harold), Wayne Fisher, and Shaunel Abele, 33 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his 11 siblings.
Funeral services are planned for Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at the Sandy Utah Crescent Stake Center, located at 10945 S 1700 E, in Sandy, Utah.
