Verona Deon Mccormick

August 21, 1924 — May 10, 2015

Our loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away on May 10, 2015. She was born August 21, 1924 in Santaquin, Utah to her mother Dorothy Dodds. She married in spring of 1940 and later divorced Owen Kent McCormick.
She grew up during the great depression and experienced what it was like to go without food and some basic needs not satisfied. This experience would later shape her habits and thinking about spending money, having food storage and preserving food. She was never wasteful and a skilled cook and baker. Her fruit and pumpkin pies were delightful.
She dropped out of high school to have children when she was 16 and was able to earn her high school diploma at age 50. Throughout her life, she worked for many different federal government employers: Dugway Proving Grounds, Hill Air Force Base, and the Veteran’s Hospital in various bookkeeping positions.
She struggled as a single parent without support from an ex-husband, lucky she wasn’t afraid to work. During that time of her life she worked 3 jobs – a federal bookkeeping job, Fred Meyer’s and for Johnny Quong, at several of his restaurants.
She was always busy and could never be without a project. She was a skilled seamstress and did beautiful needlework. Her favorite pastime was creating porcelain dolls, doll clothes and enjoyed selling her creations – her business was called Deon’s Porcelain Dolls. She loved selling all of her crafts at various Boutiques around the state.
She spent many wonderful hours participating with her children going on trips to Europe, China, National Parks and other adventures and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She had many friends at the Sandy Senior Center that met each week for many years making dolls and doing ceramic work. When she could no longer drive, the ladies from the Center would come and get her so she could still participate. A musical group that brought her a lot of joy was the Bar J Wranglers. You might say she was a Bar J Wranglers Groupie, because she went to their concerts whenever they were in and around Northern Utah.
She became a resident at Highland Cove where some of the residents swore she was an employee of Highland Cove, because she enjoyed helping the staff. She befriended many of the regular staff, Marci, Brenda, and Nadia and spoke highly of them.
Mom was an active member of the LDS Church and worked at the Jordan Temple for many years.
She is preceded in death by her two sons, Jerry Kent McCormick and Owen Kent McCormick Jr., and her grandson Jerry Shane McCormick. She is survived by her children: Colleen (Don) Sorensen, Sherry (David) Thatcher, Jean (Dan) Dimick, Cindy McCormick, and Brent (Caryl) McCormick, 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
As per mom’s wishes, there will not be a public funeral. A private family service will be held in her memory. She will be buried at the Redwood Memorial Estates, 6500 South Redwood Road.
