Vernal Kresser

After a very full and active life, Vern Kresser , 87, rejoined his sweetheart, Claire Jean on October 10, 2013 after being apart for 13 long years. Born April 13, 1926 in Salt Lake City to Lola Louise Chatelain and Vernal Kresser Sr.
After graduating from South High he joined the Air Force serving during WWII. He was discharged from the military in 1946 and while home, bumped into a girl he knew from high school. Vern and Claire Jean Shegogue were married on July 11, 1946 and were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. The Kressers raised seven children in Salt Lake City, UT then moved to Taylorsville where they lived for over 35 years.
His life long career was working as a firefighter for the Salt Lake City Fire Department. He retired in 1981 as the Captain of the Salt Lake Airport Station. He was the first Salt Lake firefighter to become an EMT.
It was no secret that Vern loved the great outdoors. He loved to fish and waterski with his family. If he wasn’t fishing, he was tying flies. Vern and Claire built a cabin in Uintalands in the 1980’s. It has been a legacy for their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, where many summers have been spent hiking, fishing and star gazing. They left the cabin every week for a day to serve as temple workers in the Jordan River Temple and served faithfully as a couple in the Wisconsin Milwaukee Mission. Treasured friendships were made in Cannon and Valley Park Stakes and Hilliard Ward.
Vern had a smile and a joke for everyone. He loved causing mischief at church by handing out Smarties to all the children. He insisted on wishing everyone a Merry Christmas all year long and when you said, “I’ll see you later,” he would reply, “Is that a threat or a promise?”
Preceded in death by his parents; wife Claire Jean Shegogue, sister Ruth Bailey, brother Gale Kresser, daughter Charlene Hayes, son Richard K. Kresser, grandchildren Kami Kresser and Casey Bytheway. Survived by his children Colleen (David) Bywater, Cathleen (David) Rowley, Connie Waters, Carryl (Kerry) Bytheway, Darryl Kresser, 19 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2013, 11:00 am at Valley Park First Ward, 4986 South Valois Drive (2300 West) in Taylorsville, UT, with viewings to be held from 6:30-8:30 pm on Wednesday at Redwood Memorial Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road and one hour prior at the church. Interment to follow at Redwood Memorial Park.
