Vernal A. Andersen

May 26, 1922 — November 4, 2016

Vernal “Pinky” Andersen, age 94, returned to his heavenly home on 4 November 2016 following a brief illness. Pinky was born 26 May 1922 in Ogden, UT to Vernal Andersen and May Neilson. He served in the Army Air Force from 26 Jun 1943 to 21 Feb 1946. He married Nina Owen of Hunter, UT in the Salt Lake Temple on 1 October 1947. They moved to Tooele in 1949. Pinky worked at the Tooele Army Depot for 22 years and retired in 1971. He then worked as a custodian for the LDS Church until 1987. Pinky and Nina served in the Canada Vancouver mission for the LDS Church from October 1987 to July 1988. Upon their return, they volunteered at the Tooele Deseret Industries from 1990 to 1995. Pinky was a true “Jack of all trades” and was happiest when he was building or fixing something for his family and friends. He lived a life of service, always volunteering to work at the LDS Church’s welfare farms and cannery and helping others until he lost his ability to see clearly due to macular degeneration in his later years. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Arnold, Art and John Ross and grandson Michael Andersen. He is survived by his wife, Nina Andersen of Tooele, UT; two sisters, Ruth Paxman of Sandy, UT; and Shirley Rakes of Riverton, UT; a sister-in-law, Edna Andersen (John Ross) of Ivins, UT; Children Robert Andersen (Lynn) of Tooele, UT; Gary Andersen (Barbara) of Sandy, UT; Peggy York (Richard) of Kearns, UT; James Andersen of Tooele, UT; Connie Hendricks (Mike) of Tooele, UT; Kaye Lopez (Henry) of Bountiful, UT; and Scott Andersen (Taunya) of Murray, UT. They have 28 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
