Verlene Tobler Derfler

March 1, 1921 — April 4, 2016

Beloved mother, grand, great, and great great grandmother, sister, and most of all, child of God, Verlene, having endured well the vicissitudes of life, returned home with honor to her Heavenly Father April 4, 2016.
Born of goodly parents Edward and Lula Stucki Tobler in Santa Clara, Utah on March 1, 1921, the first of three daughters, Verlene had the distinction of being the first girl child in the new community of Ivins of which her parents were the second to settle. Her youth in Ivins was idyllic beneath her cherished Red Mountain. Her love of scenery inspired creativity first in watercolors and later in oils. After graduation from Dixie High she left Utah’s Dixie to pursue studies up North as a beautician.
A blind date with a soldier from Pennsylvania stationed at Hill Field led to marriage to the love of her life, William Lengel Derfler on the fifth day of October, 1943. Following the birth in Salt Lake City of their first of three sons, and Bill’s discharge from the Army Air Corp, the young family ventured East to the green Appalachian valleys amongst the Pennsylvania Dutch where they resided for seven years.  Spring of 1953 found the now family of four returning West to Utah. Their new home on Oakland Ave. in South Salt Lake with its eventual remodel for a beauty shop, proved to be her humble abode for the ensuing next 62 years.
A devout and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, mom was over-joyed when her recently baptized husband was moved to make theirs a Forever Family in the Salt Lake Temple. The pleasant and welcome surprise of their last born son in 1962 completed their family. Though quiet and reserved, mom accepted callings, her favorite being a ward librarian for 31 years, using her artistic talents to add watercolor touches to the plain and simple black and white drawings of the visual aid packets for the Primary. Her testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and of His divinity was unfailing despite her hardships in life.
Verlene was preceded in death by her parents, then followed by her dear husband on May22, 1981, and finally by her sister Dixie Redmond. Survivors include her sister Karma DeVries, and sons Duane (Pamela), Ronald (Sandy), and Kevin (Mary).  The family wishes to extend love and gratitude to her “Circle of Friends” who enlivened her life in later years, to the administering angels of the Spanish Fork Beehive Home, and to Valeo Hospice for preserving her dignity in her final days.
Memorial Services will be noon, Saturday April 9, at the Haven-Kimball Ward Chapel, 2280 S. 300 East, South Salt Lake. A viewing will begin at 11:00 A. M.  Interment will take place at the Elysian Gardens, 1075 East 4580 S., Millcreek, Utah
