Venita Ann Jensen Kartchner

August 5, 1921 — August 19, 2020

Divided between not wanting to leave behind those she loved best on earth and those she loved most in Heaven, our dear Mother, Venita Ann Jensen Kartchner, quietly passed away on August 19, 2020 – two weeks after her 99th birthday. Although her body became frail over the last several months, her strong heart forced her to stay much longer than she wanted to.  Venita was born on August 5, 1921 in Moroni, Utah.  She was the fifth child of William Leslie Jensen and Anna Marie Johnson.  Despite hardships when her dad left, she enjoyed a happy childhood with her siblings, Elmo, Mary, Eugene and Doris.  Venita was the youngest until her mother remarried and her sister Dorothy was born.  Her mother worked very hard as the town dressmaker to provide a comfortable life for them.  Venita also became an excellent seamstress, valued hard work, thrift and service all attributed to her mother.
After her sophomore year, she moved to Ely, Nevada and graduated from White Pine High School in 1939. She moved to Salt Lake to attend LDS Business College. Her first real job was making tamales for Lynn Wilson.  She retired from a long career at Mountain Fuel Supply.  While attending LDS Business College she met a handsome boy named Hal Kartchner and after that didn’t have eyes for anyone else.  They discovered soon after that they shared the same birthday just one year apart! They were engaged for three months then married on May 16, 1942. Their worries about World War II soon became reality when Hal received his “greetings” from the US Army to go overseas.  The devastation of war remained very vivid in her memory the rest of her life.
As lifelong members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints they always knew that someday they would go to the Temple.  They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on April 11, 1961. They celebrated their 76th Anniversary shortly before Hal passed away on June 18, 2018.  They raised their family in Sugarhouse and Holladay. Her dream home was in South Jordan where they lived happily together for 31 years until their age and health required them to move in 2016.  Over time Sagewood at Daybreak became home with a bunch of new “kids” she loved like family.  Sincere thanks to the staff and especially the CNA’s during the last few months.
Venita was smart, quick witted, and tender hearted.  She was a bargain shopper and coupon clipper.  She cleaned until we thought she’d rub a hole in her counter.  We all know what it means to be “Grandma Clean”!  She was fair to the penny, reciprocated kindness with kindness and never wanted to be in debt to anyone.  She was known for a few swear words but she was more spiritual than we gave her credit for.  She loved the Lord but served Him in quiet, unassuming ways and stayed true to her covenants and commitment to the Gospel.
She is survived by her three children – Terry Kartchner (Tammie) St. George, Alan Kartchner (Carol) South Jordan and Becky Sohm (Dallan) Bluffdale. She gave each of us unconditional love throughout our lives and we will truly feel the void she leaves.  Her legacy will carry on in the lives of her 15 grandchildren that she loved dearly and a growing posterity of big and little “greats”. What a privilege for them to all have had the opportunity to know and love their Grandma K. Her favorite parting words to each of us have always been “Love You Best”.  Until we meet again Mom – WE LOVE YOU BEST!
