Velva Evangeline “Vangie” Ratcliffe Steiner

April 24, 1929 — March 21, 2016

Velva Evangeline “Vangie” Ratcliffe Steiner passed away unexpectedly and returned home to our Father in Heaven on the first day of Spring, Monday, March 21, 2016. She endured a courageous battle with chronic pain resulting from a fall and broken hip five years ago, and a recent bout of pneumonia and influenza. Vangie was born on April 24, 1929 to Ira Hale Ratcliffe and Nora Lee Smith in Vinton, Virginia. She graduated valedictorian from William Byrd High School in Roanoke, Virginia. She loved English and American History and everything she wrote was done with the most beautiful penmanship. Her parents’ desire to have their family sealed together in the Salt Lake Temple drove their decision to move west and to later settle in Bountiful, Utah. While employed at Westinghouse Electric she met Kenneth Hawkes Steiner. They were later married on October 8, 1954 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Vangie was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served in numerous callings, her fondest being a primary teacher, undoubtedly due to her deep love for children. Her greatest service was enjoyed by her immediate family members due to her lifelong commitment and love shown in countless ways. Even her daughters and sons-in-law felt like they were her own children. Her memory and ability to recall details was astonishing even into her later years. She never forgot a birthday of her 5 children and spouses, 28 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. She delighted in brightening their day whenever she could through small expressions and gestures filled with details of love. Her loving and sincere acts of kindness will be forever remembered and there are no words to express how much her calm and kind presence will be missed. Her legacy will live on through her children and grandchildren and the lives of all those she influenced for good. We find great peace and comfort knowing this is only goodbye for a short time because our Savior has provided the way for us to once again reunite as a family.
Vangie is preceded in death by her parents, brother John, sisters Ruth, Sue and Reva. Survived by her husband Kenneth, children: Victor (Jill), Pamela (Steven), Lyndon (Monica), Janet (Benjamin), and Reed (Sandra), her sisters: Betty, Dorothy, Maryann, her brothers: Irvin, Dale, and Floyd. Viewings will be held in her honor Friday, March 25, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, March 26, 2016 from 10-10:45 a.m. at the LDS Butler Hills Chapel located at 2700 East 7000 South Cottonwood Heights, Utah. The funeral will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Mortuary 5850 South 900 East. Interment will be held at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery 3115 East 7800 South Cottonwood Heights, Utah.  Memories and condolences may be shared online at www.MemorialUtah.com.
