V. Kent Williams

August 28, 1950 — June 11, 2017

Following twelve years battling colon cancer and four months scoured by liver failure, V. Kent Williams succumbed to death on June 11, 2017.
BYU had no idea of the gift Margaret Ann and Owen Blair Williams was presenting to them, when Kent was born on August 28, 1950, in Provo, Utah.  As his father finished getting an advanced degree, Kent began a lifetime love of Cougar Blue.  He and his father would go on to share this joyously throughout Kent’s life.
Moving to San Jose, Kent was delighted to become the oldest brother of eight siblings whom he cherished and held close throughout his life. During his childhood, he loved getting into sports, mischief and hilarity with his brothers, Forrest (Jenny), Mark (Linda) and Jeff (Sheila).  Four sisters, Anne Williams, Linda (Steve Stay), Sherri (Alma Hale) and Becky (Dan Orr) filled his heart with a rare joy they could lift his spirits, making him laugh; head thrown back and tears in his hazel eyes.
Additionally, Kent was especially close to his adopted brother and sister-in-law, Art and Karen Wright, who, along with his niece Tina Adams, and his faithful wonder dog Izzy, served and cared for him with his wife during the critical and painful final months of his life.  Without their loving selfless care, Kent would never have had the comfort and freedom to enjoy his final months of life on his own terms. A man who was used to being in charge, Kent chafed against the limitations of his illness and final frailties.  Art, Karen, and Tina, along with Jessica, did everything they could to provide for his comfort and freedom, so he felt he could order up any desire for food, drink, or entertainment and comfort at any time. He counted this a particular blessing from those who loved him dearly.
Kent was a man who worked extremely hard in his life. He learned to work alongside his uncles and father at family ranches in the mountains of Utah as a young boy.  As a teenager, he and his brothers assisted his father in pouring cement for small residential jobs in San Jose.  Kent became proficient enough to run jobs on his own by the time he was in high school. He and Jessica did cement work on their own home in San Jose, where she marveled at his skill then cried when turning the cement truck in late. Her tears spared them the late fee and Kent declared her a very good side kick for that end of the day feat!
Kent excelled as a CPA.  He had a charisma that led clients to place their trust in him.  He repaid that trust by working assiduously on their behalf.  His fellow partners at Mohler, Nixon and Williams (recently sold to Moss Adams) found him a worthy and reliable man, valuable for counsel and leadership.
As a father, Kent loved his children, Gregory Kent (daughter Emma), James David, Kristy Ann (son Jeremiah) and Brian Kevin (daughters Skylar and Hayley.)  He worried about them throughout their growing years and took great joy in coaching the boys in sports.  He had great delight in his daughter’s skill at the piano.  Any success his children had in life, he attributed to their own efforts and loved them for striving to excel. He will continue to watch and cheer for them from the next life; hoping that they will remember always the love he continues to send them.
Kent had a great love for genealogy and as Jessica was first generation, he was able to open fields ripe to harvest of families and individuals waiting and anxious to have their work done.  Jessica would feel spirits anxious to be found hovering in their home and would prompt her husband to get to work so she could get some rest.  Sure enough, he would go searching and whole new lines would be found, or a single person would be discovered with hard work.  The AHA moments were so joyful, there could be no doubt that this work was indeed a joint spiritual journey for both of them.
If you didn’t know Kent, you have missed getting to know one of the most amazing and wonderful men in the world.  You have also missed being invited to a lot of BYU games because this man loved his Cougs!!  Upon moving back to Utah, he began going to four games of any sort per week.  And he took friends with him, so he could educate them to the wonder and glory of the Cougs.  Women’s Soccer? He was there!  Men’s Volleyball?  Let’s go!  Knot-tying? Kent would fill the car if that became a team sport!!
Kent loved his Cougs, the Gospel, genealogy, his family and friends, his dogs, his grandchildren, and most of all, his sweetheart, Jessica.  She was the best part of every day for him.  They rejoiced in every day, every ‘I love you,” every chance to share new parts of this glorious world.
