Toshio Hoki
1928-2022
Toshio Hoki, 94, of Sandy died on July 21, 2022.
He was born in Gunnison, Utah on May 1, 1928, son of Shigechika and Misa Miyagawa Hoki. The great depression forced the family to move to Holladay, in 1932, where he grew up on a vegetable farm. He graduated from Granite High School in 1946 and attended the University of Utah part-time for three years while working on the farm. When the Korean War started in 1950, he was drafted into the Army. After basic training in California, he served 9 months in Japan and 9 months in Korea.
He married Kikumi Miyagishima on December 25, 1952 in Reno, Nevada. He was able to finish college on the G.I. bill. He graduated from the University of Washington with a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1957. His marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1975. He worked for the Boeing Co. in Seattle, Sperry Utah in Salt Lake, and 27 years for Hercules Aerospace in Magna, Utah.
He served as president of the Mt. Olympus chapter of the JACL in 1972-1973. His interests included fishing, attending biennial family reunions throughout the western states and western Canada for 34 years, and playing poker with friends.
He is survived by a sister, Elaine (Ben) Matsui; four children, Stephen (Melody) Hoki, Naomi Martindale, Richard, and James; seven grandchildren, Becky (Kristian) Hargett, Valerie (Bradley) Illingsworth, Christina Hoki, Travis (Lindsey) Hoki, Natalie Martindale, Matthew Martindale, and Jason Martindale; and nine great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Kikumi, a son Gregory, and three brothers, David, Shigeo, and Murray.
A small viewing followed by a graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at the Mountain View Memorial Cemetery, 3115 E. 7800 S.Service Information
