Torao Nakagawa

March 29, 1926 — November 30, 2016

Torao “Lou” Nakagawa
1926 – 2016
West Jordan
Torao “Lou” Nakagawa passed away peacefully on November 24, 2016 at the VA Hospital surrounded by his family.  He was born on March 29, 1926 in National City, California to Sukichi Nakagawa and Matsue Kokehara. Lou met his future bride at a bowling league and married Merry Atagi on December 5, 1959 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He farmed in West Jordan for many years raising sugar beets, pumpkins, peas, onions, tomatoes and various other produce and also drove a school bus for the Jordan School District. He loved making trips to Wendover, his annual trips to Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Obon, meeting his coffee buddies at Smith’s and going out to eat.
Lou and his family were relocated from California to Poston, Arizona internment camp during WWII. He was drafted into the military from camp and served in the United States Army for 2 years. Following discharge from the Army, he joined the Nakagawa family on the farm and settled for life in Utah. He was a big Jazz Basketball fan and a closet LA Laker, Bronco and NY Yankees fan. We will all miss watching the Jazz games with him and just hanging out with him at Nikkei Center and family gatherings. Later in his life with his health challenges, he retained his love of life and no one knew how much pain he was in or struggling with his health, as he still had his hearty laugh and his infectious smile.
He is survived by his wife, Merry, daughters, Gail (Mark) Minaga and Nancy (Brian) Kobata, nephew Ralph Nakaishi, grandchildren Matthew Minaga, Anne & Kevin Kobata. Preceded in death by his parents, sister Kiyoko Nakaishi and brother Isao “Chingus” Nakagawa.
Funeral service will be on Friday, December 9 at 5 pm at the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple, 211 West 100 South, Salt Lake City, Utah. A visitation will be held from 4-5 pm prior to the service.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and staff of the VA Hospital for their compassionate care of Dad.
