Thomas Glyn White

May 3, 1943 — March 28, 2022

Thomas Glyn White, age 78, passed from the loving arms of his family into the outstretched arms of his Heavenly Father on March 28, 2002. He was born in Huntington, Utah, on May 3, l943 while his father, Thomas Lynn White, was serving in the army during World War II in the South Pacific. His mother, Jessie Arnold White, stayed with her step-mother in
Huntington. After the return of his father, the family moved to Salt Lake City and then to their new home in Midvale when he was 8 years old.
Glyn graduated from Jordan High School in 1961 and then went to the University of Utah for a year before serving an LDS mission to the Northeast British Mission from l963 to 1965. Upon completing his mission, he returned to the University of Utah and graduated with a MBA in Business Management and a BA in Secondary Education. He loved teaching and taught at Brighton High School and Joel P. Jensen Middle School for over 30 years all the while working part time as a meat cutter. He always worked hard to provide for his family.
While in college, his mother and a coworker decided he needed to go on a date, so they arranged a blind date with a sweet BYU girl, Carol Nielsen, and it blossomed into a marriage proposal. She said “yes” and they were married November 19, 1965 in the Salt Lake Temple. Five years later two wonderful children, Bryan and Julie, came to bless their union.
A year after their marriage, he was approached by “Uncle Sam” and he joined the National Guard during the Vietnam War. However, two years later, he received an honorable medical discharge due to diabetes. He was told he wouldn’t live to be 50 years old; but, he fooled the doctors and lived just short of his 79th birthday.
Although Glyn went to the University of Utah, he was “converted” to BYU football and basketball and they spent 20 plus years as season ticket holders. When first “converted” he would stand at the top of the stairs in our home and sing the Utah Fight Song and then charge downstairs to watch BYU football. Go Cougars! Glyn also loved reading church and science fiction books, going on trips with the children in the camper, going on church history tours, BYU Education Week, traveling to Europe, and cruising. He also was a dog lover and was never without a dog by his side.
Glyn was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many different positions. One of the positions he enjoyed most was working with the elderly in the Branch Presidency of the Atria in Sandy, along with his wife. He also loved calling bingo there for several years, and the elderly loved him because he had a loud booming voice that they all could hear. On the flip side, he was called to be a nursery teacher for the one and two year old’s. He bragged he was going to go to the nursery and lay on the floor and sleep while his wife gave the lessons and entertained the kids. He walked into the nursery, laid down on the floor in a corner and was smothered by little ones climbing all over him. Nap time in the nursery was nevermore. Glyn was also an officiator in the Jordan River Temple and served faithfully for many years.
Glyn is survived by his wife, Carol, son Bryan (Heather), daughter Julie Olsen (Travis) and two lovely granddaughters Mackenzi (Chris) and Maddilyn (Zach). He is also survived by his brothers Dennis (Cheri), Ross (Ron) and Craig (Cherri).
A big THANK YOU to Quality Home Health & Hospice (Tamara, Crystal, Shelly and staff) and especially to our daughter Julie and son-in-law Travis Olsen for their loving and tender care.
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant…” (Matthew 25:21)
