Taaga Gautavai Tauvao passed away gently and peacefully on December 9, 2020 at home in Sandy, Utah surrounded by her loved ones. She was born November 29, 1956 in the village of Utulei, on the island of PagoPago in American Samoa, the eldest daughter of Pepe Taualai Gautavai and Faitasia Puefua Gautavai.
She is preceded in death by her Mother and two sisters Faitasia and Alice. She is survived by the love of her life, Togasisifo Tenari Tauvao and their son Kennedy Tate Tauvao. Taaga grew up in her early years in Oahu, Hawaii. Later she came to San Francisco, California with her Grandmother. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Taaga earned her Masters’ Degree in Nursing Education and she was working on her PHD in Nursing when she developed kidney failure. Her career as a nurse spans 43 years at the following hospitals: LDS Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Center, Intermountain Medical Center, and UCSF in San Francisco.
During her lifetime, Taaga was active as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Taaga served a mission in Arequipa, Peru, from 1978-1980 where she developed a lifelong love for the culture and people of Peru. Taaga and Togasisifo were sealed in the Bountiful, Utah Temple October 27, 1999. Taaga served as Relief Society President, Primary President, and Stake Young Womens’ President. Wherever she lived her home was of elegance and beauty, sharing her love for design. Taaga loved anything of beauty and her family.
Taaga was loved by many and she spent her life in service caring for everyone around her, both in her personal and professional life. A viewing and memorial service for Taaga will be held on 12/18/2020 from 5:00 -9:00 p.m. at Memorial Mortuary located at 6500 South Redwood Road West Jordan, Utah 84123.
Following Salt Lake County’s mandate on facial coverings, face masks are required at all public gatherings. Social distancing will be enforced.
