Sylvestra “Sylve” Ernestine Spoerri

January 1, 1940 — July 14, 2020

Sylve was born on January 1st, 1940, in Vienna Austria.  She was born in the home of her parents, Franz and Ernestine Liebermann. She is the oldest of 3 children, with her younger sister, Ernie, and the youngest being Franz.
She was born during WWII, which helped shape her childhood development and made her the caring and protective mother and wife that she became.
While being a young adult in Austria, she chose a career as a Chef in Culinary Art and advanced her career in Hotel Management.
After visiting one of her paternal aunts in Zurich Switzerland, she chose to stay there and continue her career and education as a nutritionist.
This is when she met August Spoerri. They dated and married on May 3rd, 1962.
Sylve, as she was known, was blessed with 4 children.  The oldest, Franz, died as a 3-month-old, then she had Silvia, Bernie, and Werner.
Sylve and August have always been faithful churchgoers.  They attended the Catholic Church for a couple of years and then started to follow the Methodist beliefs.
August’s work required him to stay the entire week and only return home for the weekends.  He asked Sylve NOT to allow the different Christian missionaries or sects to come into our home.
It was during one of those weeks that she did not listen to her husband.  The LDS Missionary Sisters rang the doorbell. Sylve did open the door and talked to them a bit.  There was something that the Sisters said that caused Sylve to listen.  They told her that we once again have a living prophet, and that caught her attention.   This is something that her mother had always told her, that there are prophets of God on this earth.
She would meet with the Sisters on a regular basis, without August’s knowledge.  It wasn’t until she scheduled a baptismal date and they need his signature, that August found out.  This was the first time that he even heard about the missionaries and lessons.
This did cause some contention, but thanks to our Lord’s help, August too found his way to the LDS faith. They both were baptized in 1971.
If it weren’t for our mother, we would have never immigrated to the US.  Christmas time 1977 August asked her what her Christmas wishes were.  She thought about it and remembered that her childhood wish was always to come to the United States.   August thought and prayed about this and having been a good provider, he was able to buy her roundtrip ticket to several cities in the United States to explore.  Back in Switzerland, the family told everyone she was on vacation, but she never came back.  She found a place and, with the Lord’s help, a way to get immigration papers so that her family could live in this country.
As a modern-day pioneer, it was not easy to come to a new country with 3 teenage children.  We all had to learn a new language, customs, and adapt to a new way of living.
There were many trials and challenges in our new home Country, but it NEVER wavered her faith in the gospel and our Lord Jesus Christ.
It was not easy, and they tried living in several states, Missouri, California, Colorado, but finally found a peaceful existence in the Salt Lake Valley.
She is survived by her husband August Franz Spoerri, children Silvia Spoerri Miller, Bernhard Spoerri, Werner Spoerri, grandchildren Anna, Benjamin, Joshua Miller, Austin, Jordan, Kasaundra, Tristan Spoerri, great-grandchildren Braxton, Easton, Berkeley, and Hudson Spoerri.
She is preceded in death by parents: Franz Leopold, Ernestine Liebermann, and her 1st born son Franz.
