Susan Louise (Helquist) Speakman
April 4, 1952 — June 17, 2019
Susan Louise Speakman, age 67 passed away peacefully at her home June 17, 2019 in West Valley City, Utah. She was born April 4, 1952 in Murray Utah to Boyd LaCon Helquist and Phyllis Louise Ditlevsen.
She was married to Alton Andrew Speakman on August 19, 1977 in the Salt Lake Temple for all time and eternity.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in numerous callings throughout her life. Some her favorite callings were working in the library, Primary Chorister, ward missionary and serving the sisters in her ward as a compassionate service member and ministering sister. She was called to work as a temple worker for many years and loved to visit and perform ordinances in the many temples around the state.
She graduated from Box Elder High School and went on to get her bachelor’s degree from Weber State University in Teaching. Susan loved teaching her 2nd grade kids for 33 years up till her retirement in 2008. Even after retirement, she continued teaching as a substitute teacher for Granite School District for many years.
She loved to keep busy with crafting, scrapbooking, reading and doing Grandma camp during the summers with her two grandsons. She enjoyed traveling with Alton, especially on cruises. She served as the President of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers till her passing. In her retirement, she was learning how to play the Lowry organ and speak Spanish. She also enjoyed camping with the Family Campers and RV’ers.
She is survived by her loving husband Alton Speakman, her two son’s Bob (Jennifer) and Blaine Speakman; two Grandson’s Zack and Gavin Speakman; brother Boyd (Bonnie) Helquist and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents Boyd and Louise Helquist, her sister Jody Helquist, her brother Darrell Helquist and sister-in-law Debbie Helquist.
A viewing will be held for Susan on Thursday, June 20th 2019 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Hunter Copper Hill Stake Center located at 6710 West 4145 South, West Valley City, UT, 84128. The funeral services will be held Friday, June 21st at noon with a viewing prior from 11:00 – 11:45 AM at the Copper Hill Stake Center. Interment will be held at Memorial Redwood Cemetery located at 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, UT 84123 following the services.Service Information
