Susan Gillette Gordon

March 1, 1940 — July 30, 2021

Susan Gillette Gordon, 81, passed away Friday, July 30, 2021, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born to Willard L. Gillette, Jr., and Rowena Speirs Gillette in Ellensburg, WA on March 1, 1940 at 12:05 a.m., five minutes shy of being a leap year baby. She was the younger sister to Willard L. Gillette III and Jayne Gillette Garside, and they grew up in Kansas City, KS.
Before starting college at BYU, she spent the summer with her aunt in Tooele, UT and met and fell in love with A. Kim Gordon, “the boy next door from 1000 miles away!” They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 23, 1959, and had four children: Mike, Steve, Tawna and Stephanie. She was completely devoted to her family. They worked so hard to build a beautiful life and home. In later years, she lived for her grandchildren and offered them unconditional love. She and Dad never missed a baseball game, dance recital, swim meet or water polo game, gymnastics meet, lacrosse game or cello concert of any of her grandkids.
She instinctively nurtured anyone who was lonely, sick or needed help. She loved all animals, especially her kitties. She was a great gardener; only giving it up when she could no longer drag the hose around the yard. She was a talented photographer, with her family as her favorite subjects. She also took some amazing photographs during our trip to Scotland.
She served others as a volunteer at St. Mark’s Hospital for 40 years, personally keeping the St. Mark’s Gift Shop in business.
When they retired, Dad from teaching 40 years at Highland High and her from cooking, they adopted a second family at Olive Garden. We thank you for sharing your love, families and lives with them, and helping them maintain some independence right up to the end.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Kim Gordon; children: Mike (Debbie) Gordon, Steve (Liz) Gordon, Tawna (Ron) Nielsen and Stephanie Gordon. Grandchildren: Jason (Tiffany) Gordon, Mikelle Gordon, Tyler Nielsen, Jessie Gordon, Jeni Gordon, and Alexandra Gordon. Great-granddaughter Abbi Bright.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Sugarhouse Park, Fabian Pavilion (by the pond) on Sunday, August 15, 2021 at 11 am. Very casual dress.
Thank you to the staff at St. Mark’s Hospital for the wonderful support given to her and our family at the end.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to causes that were close to her heart:  http://donatelife.net https://nuzzlesandco.org  http://utahpridecenter.org/youthandfamilyprograms  http://naacp.org/donate

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the beauty in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that one life has breathed easier because you lived here. This is to have succeeded.”
