Sumi Arakaki

August 8, 1923 — June 1, 2022

In the quiet early morning of June 1, 2022, Sumi Arakaki, a loving wife, mother, Grandma, and
Auntie, was reunited with her husband, Seiko and son, Dennis. Sumi was born in 1923 to
Otoichi and Kinuye Oki. She married Seiko Arakaki in 1947. They had four children.
Mom enjoyed activities with family and friends. From preparing Sunday dinners, crocheting
afghan throws, baking for church fellowship and neighborhood gifts, making Mother’s Day
corsages for the church service, to cooking and baking for family and friends for Shogatsu, a
Japanese New Year’s Day tradition. All were welcome to share in her circle of love.
Mom worked a full-time job yet served as a Sunday School teacher and the secretary to the
Shriners Children’s Volunteer Services Corp for many years. Besides her crafts, she enjoyed
working on jigsaw puzzles and gambling during her annual trips to Wendover. She enjoyed
everything she did and was rarely without a smile.
Mom was preceded in death by her brothers Akira and Peter, and sister Shizuye. She is
survived by her children Pat (Ron) Price, Michael Arakaki, Janet (David) Moulton,
granddaughters Madison and Breyanna, and many nieces and nephews who considered her
their second “Mom”.
The family would like to thank Symbii Home Health and Hospice and Beehive Senior Care for all
their loving attention to Mom. We are especially grateful to Tia Coleman-Walton, Tammy Petty,
Mackenzie Jackson, and Teresa Snow for their unwavering love and care.
Services will be held at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary, 3115 Bengal Blvd, Cottonwood
Heights, Utah on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Viewing will be one hour prior to the
service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Japanese Church of
Christ.
