Steven Thomas Berthold

July 2, 1947 — July 21, 2022

Steven Thomas Berthold died the way he lived, on his own terms. A charismatic, assertive, boisterous man of many opinions, he would hold captive the attentions of everyone with stories of his adventurous life.
Always the center of any gathering he experienced more than most men, living and working hard, never playing until he had “earned it”, holding himself and others to exacting standards. Knowing Steve meant you were familiar with his 6 Ps, his obsession for punctuality, his distaste for cell phones and “doing the best you can with what you have, at the time you have it”.
Steve had a love of animals, babies, skiing, riding his Harley and the Ballet. His taste in music was always Blues and Rock-n-Roll with the volume up, and singing at the top of his deep and unmistakable announcer’s voice. He relished conversation, discussion and debate, and if in addition there was fine dining or entertaining friends, he was in the height of happiness. His thirst for knowledge meant he was forever full of questions and at times “full of himself!”, revealed by his oft pronounced “That’s just my opinion…and it SHOULD BE yours”!
Born the eldest son of H. Siegfried and Winifred Thomas, he was raised in Salt Lake City and Centerville. He was an Allstate Football player at Davis High and played for BYU. He graduated Suma Cum Laudi from the University of Maryland with a degree in Criminal Justice and served in the United States Army prior to an admirable 30-year career as a Special Agent in the United States Secret Service, where he served under six US Presidents.
His window on history took him around the world where he met Kings and Queens, Heads of State, Dictators, Dignitaries and Religious Leaders, made a few dear friends, and remained until the end, a private man.
He leaves behind in his mountain castle and sanctuary The Schlossberg, his wife Melanie, Daughters Sarah, Marianne, Leigh and Cindy, Sons (in laws) Brian, Brett and Bruce, Grandchildren Anson, Heber, Isaac, Jordan and Evan and an abundant extended family as well as those so dear to him and whom he called his “East Coast Family”. An intimate service and burial were held to lay Steve to rest and a Celebration of his Life will follow at a future time.
Steve, Bumper, Grandpa, Hampa, Husband Gay, Papa, we love, honor and miss you. We know you will always be our Protector and that you are merely away to “do the advance”.
