Steven James Oblad Sr.

December 29, 1945 — April 8, 2020

Our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 in Taylorsville, Utah at the age of 74. Steve was born on December 29, 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Basil John Oblad and Marjorie Cherrington Oblad. He had three sons from an earlier marriage.  Steve was an active parent, enjoyed all aspects of raising his three boys, and watching them grow up to be fine young men.
Steve was always on the go.  As a young adult, he enjoyed fast cars.  This resulted in him losing his license for a period of time. He enjoyed going to Moab and exploring trails in his Jeep.  However, one of his greatest loves was riding bicycles. From a young boy with his first newspaper route to a seasoned adult, Steve spent a good part of his life on a bike. He enjoyed riding them for exercise and racing them for sport. He enjoyed taking them apart and using parts from different bikes to build better and faster bikes. Basically, if it had wheels, he raced it, wrecked it, rolled it, or repaired it. He would use his talents when his boys chose to race BMX.  It would not stop there.  He would also support two of his granddaughters who wanted to race BMX like their father. He was well known and deeply cared for by the BMX community.
Steve like others faced many challenges, but in particular, he struggled after the unexpected passing of his son.  He took on more of a fatherly role for his son’s two daughters since that time.
He always enjoyed pulling pranks and making people laugh or smile. You never knew what he had up his sleeve or where he might pop up.  He wished that he had more time, but as he would say “I’ve had a great ride.”
Steve was reunited with his parents Basil and Marjorie Oblad, and son Bryan Oblad. He is survived by his sons Steve Jr. (JaNeil) Oblad, Mike (Maria) Oblad; granddaughters Brooke (Luis) Medina, Shelby Oblad, Breanna (Jayden) Anderson, Aubrey Oblad; and great-grandchildren Anthony and Aniyah Medina. A life like his deserves to be celebrated, so we will do just that when permitted to do so.
A celebration of life will be held in Steve’s honor on August 21, 2020 at 3:00 PM at Memorial Redwood Mortuary underneath the white canopy – 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, UT, 84123.
