Sonia Knudsen Weichers

February 10, 1945 — May 16, 2021

Our angel mother, Sonia Knudsen Weichers, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on May 16, 2021 after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
Sonia was born in Brigham City, Utah as the second daughter to Hans Henry and LaPreal Knudsen. She grew up there spending summers picking strawberries, peaches and cherries from the age of 7. In 1956, her parents and sisters, Judy Sherie and Janet, moved to Bountiful, Utah where, at the age of 11, she earned money bunching radishes for a local farmer. She loved living in Bountiful where she made many lifelong friends that she adored. As she got older, she worked at Lagoon in the summers and participated in many plays and musicals at Bountiful High School. She loved performing, modeling, dancing and was the majorette for her high school marching band.
In 1963 she attended Weber State College and then Bountiful Beauty College where she received her Cosmetology license. She absolutely loved doing hair and continued doing that for most of her life. In 1969, she met a tall, charming man who swept her off her feet. On November 7, 1969, John Edward Weichers and Sonia Knudsen married at the Carillon Reception Center in Bountiful. They made their home there in Bountiful and started their life together.
All Sonia wanted in life was to be a kind and loving mother. In November 1970, she got her wish. John and Sonia welcomed their first child, Wendi K., and this cherished part of life began. In December 1972, Jason John was born to their growing family. Five years passed and Chad Cameron was born in November of 1977. Eighteen short months later in July 1979, they were surprised with twin daughters, Nikki Marie and Jodi McKale. The Weichers family was complete, for now.
Sonia relished in being a mother and all the things that came along with raising a family. She taught her children right from wrong, how to have fun and make something out of the simplest things. She fueled creative minds and showed by example what kindness and love looked like.
She cherished life and enjoyed it to its fullest. She loved to sew, ski, water ski, play tennis, snowmobile and read. She and John traveled to places across the globe and loved it immensely. She was the garage sale queen with her sunflower aprons for everyone and colorful signs on every street. She looked forward to it every summer, much to the chagrin of her children.
Sonia loved the gospel and held many callings over the years for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served faithfully as primary teacher, nursery leader, librarian, Beehive leader, camp director and visiting teacher. She adored all of those she worked with and the close friendships she made through the years. She loved visiting the temple. It was a place where she could reflect and have the solitude and peace that she needed.
As the Weichers family grew, grandchildren entered the picture. Sonia was enamored and this became her most cherished source of joy. She graciously watched them as they grew and taught them the things grandmothers should. Love, kindness and how to be a good person. Her grandchildren adored her and are better because of her love. It did not matter if they were of her blood or brought by marriage, they were all hers and she loved them endlessly and would do anything for them.
In 2018 she was diagnosed with a form of ovarian cancer. She put on her armor and started fighting the ugly beast with her family and all of those who loved her by her side. She fought with all she had, all while continuing to be the pillar of love and light that she was to all.
Sonia always had a quiet peace about her. Her rosy cheeks and smile greeted everyone who entered the Weichers home. Commonly friends would comment on her softness and kindness. She radiated love and all those around her felt it. Our hearts are broken and aching upon her passing and it is hard to imagine life without here on earth. We find peace and comfort knowing that she is with her father in heaven and pain free at last. We imagine there was a glorious reunion with her parents and sister as well as others who passed before her. We know in our hearts that we will be with her again and rejoice in the blessing of her love. As her family, we would like to honor and give our sincerest thanks all those doctors, nurses, hospice and hospital workers who supported her and gave her the best care possible throughout the years. She was blessed with people who quickly learned how special she was. We cannot forget to our family, friends, neighbors and ward members who went out of their way to give such love, kindness and respect to our mother and our entire family. We love you all.
Sonia is survived by her loving husband John Edward Weichers; sister Janet Newton (Dick); her children, daughter Wendi (Mark), son Jason, son Chad (Heather), daughter Nikki, daughter Jodi; grandchildren Parker, Camryn, Hanna (Austin), Haley, Braxton (Syd), Bailee, Ridge, Jagger, Grady, MiKayla, Aleea, Zoey and Jayce; greatgrandchildren Knixon, Axel and Lennox.
