Si’upolu Tela Mulitalo was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
She was born to Ulu Tui Tela and Malia Satele Tela on May 6, 1936, in Sili, Manu’a, American Samoa. She is the second oldest of five brothers: Alailefaleula Tela, Tavita Tela, Tela Fereti Tela, Filipo Tela Lutali, and Tui Tela. She has two sisters: Falefa Tela Motului and Moana Tela Auelua.
She met her sweetheart and husband, Fagamanu Pa’ovale Mulitalo, in high school and they were later married in Faleniu, Tutuila on August 7, 1959. They moved to Laie, Hawaii in January 1960, and were sealed for all time and eternity at the Laie, Hawaii Temple. They lived in Laie for 9 years and had their first five children, Toalima, Fagamanu Jr., Olevia, Maria, and Tavita. They moved on to live in Compton, California in August of 1969, where they had two more sons, Feleti and Joseph.
She loved and lived life to the fullest. Her greatest accomplishments and blessings in life were her family, church, and education.
In her journal, she wrote that she was born to great and loving parents and that she loved her siblings just as much.
She loved and cherished her husband, whom she often referred to as her Super Man; even after he passed away 37 years ago.
She raised her 7 children in a very strict, but loving way. She did the same with her 23 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She often told them to say their prayers before they sleep and to serve a mission when they grow up. She was very proud when two of her sons and daughter served missions. She was even more proud when 5 granddaughters and 4 grandsons went on to serve missions as well.
She was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shortly after she was married. She was a strong member of the Church, who served twice as a Relief Society President, was also a Primary President, and served as a Sunday School teacher for many years.
Education was an important part of her journey in life. Although she didn’t finish high school in Samoa, she went on to graduate at Compton High several years after her kids went to school. She continued her education at Compton Jr College where she received her Associate's degree and then finally achieved her ultimate goal by getting her Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies at California State University Dominguez Hills at the age of 47.
She will also be remembered for her love of dancing and singing; which she often did every chance she got, even to the very last day of her life.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Fagamanu Mulitalo, her daughter, Maria Mulitalo, and her great-grandson, Liu Tavai.
