Sione Hia Katoa

November 6, 1937 — April 5, 2022

Sione Hia Katoa, known by his loved ones as ‘Pa’, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family, April 5, 2022 at the age of 84.  Sione was born November 6, 1937 in Pea, Tongatapu, Tonga to Semisi Katoa and Suliana Fatai Fatafehi Faka’iloatonga.  Sione was first married to the late Sisilia Moa with whom he had two daughters, Otufangavalu and Pelenita.  Later in life he was married to the late JoDeane Riley with whom he had his youngest daughter Tapenisi.
Sione was a loving father, brother, son and especially grandfather. Sione worked as a laborer from a young age in construction specializing in masonry, continuing this work when he migrated to the United States. ‘Pa’ was a very humble, selfless, strong, courageous, hardworking family man. That loved being surrounded by the laughter of his great grandchildren. Although he was not a man of many words, his actions spoke volumes.  Each time he saw his loved ones he had the most warm, loving and inviting smile that said more than words could ever express.  ‘Pa’ had many skills, but caring for others was what he did best, which was the way he would demonstrate his affection. He loved each of his daughters in his own way. ‘Pa’ communicated his love through acts of service whether it be cooking for his daughter and grandchildren, mowing his brother’s lawn, giving fatherly reminders of what’s important, making sure they never left feeling upset, holding onto his late daughter’s dress for sentimental reasons or holding his hand out to comfort his daughter during his final moments. Each and every act was an expression of his love and devotion.
Sione was preceded in death by his Parents Semisi and Suliana, wives Sisilia and JoDeane, daugthers  Otufangavalu Angilau and  Pelenita Katoa,  7 siblings Vili Oto, Mounga Fua, Molitoni, Paula, Salote, Sioeli  and Loseli, grandson Siale Angilau and great grandson Prince Owens. He is survived by his daughter Tapenisi Katoa, Sister Tapenisi Falahola and brother Inoke Katoa, 10 grandkids, 17 great grandkids, 2 great-great grandkids and many nieces and nephews.
