Shirley Oborn

January 20, 2016 — April 20, 2016

Salt Lake City, Utah-On April 20, 2016 our mom took dads hand and rejoined her beloved, eternal companion in our Heavenly Father’s kingdom.
Shirley was born to loving parents; Mark B. and Nona Faye Openshaw Nelson in Park City, Utah. She married Edward B. (Ted) Oborn, her caring and faithful partner on August 16, 1950 in the Manti LDS Temple. They were married fifty-four years until Ted’s passing in 2004.
She was educated at Payson High School, Brigham Young University, University of Utah, and Utah State University earning several advanced degrees. She was a teacher for the Salt Lake City School District for forty one years. She was a hardworking, dedicated and resourceful teacher who treasured the association with her students and their families. Many of these relationships developed into lifelong friendships. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Mothers Club for many years.
She graduated from LDS Seminary and was a member of the LDS Church. She served faithfully in various ward and stake positions. Her favorite calling was as Cultural Refinement Teacher in the Relief Society as it afforded her the opportunity to read, study, learn and grow.
Shirley loved traveling, both home and abroad. Visiting many countries with her daughter enabled her to observe the different cultures and customs of the people and to understand and appreciate them.
She found much pleasure in reading, poetry recitals, antique hunting, visiting museums, art exhibits, the theater, opera, and entertaining family and friends at home or at the cabin in Timber Lakes. Above all she loved, nurtured, and cared for her family. She was always involved in and supportive of their interests and activities. Planning family parties and outings were always high on her priority list.
Much of her life she was confronted with serious health issues, but always met the new challenges and continued going forward. Shirley never lost her sense of humor. She always enjoyed a good joke or pun. She sometimes greeted friends by asking “Do these earrings make me look fat?”
Shirley is survived by her daughter Staci Sain of Holladay, UT and her son Sean Oborn of South Jordan, UT. They, together with her granddaughter, Jennifer Carter, helped her remain in her home.
Also surviving were her other grandchildren: Jessica McDuffes, Aaron Sain, Michael Oborn, Tyler Oborn, Bronson Oborn and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a nephew, Mark Clinton Nelson, an aunt, Lorraine Lovelins, a dear cousin, Elda Peck, and best friend Geri Barker.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Mark R. Nelson and 2 grandsons: Mark Nicholas Sain and Chance Oborn.
