Scott Melvin Freebairn

September 25, 1955 — April 17, 2021

Scott Melvin Freebairn, age 65, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 17, 2021 in his home in Layton, Utah. Scott was born September 25, 1955 in Cedar City, Utah to Melvin and Jacquelyn Freebairn and was the oldest of 6 children. He grew up in Sandy, Utah and attended Brighton High School. After graduating, he served a Latter-Day Saint mission to Houston, Texas and loved the opportunity to share his testimony of Jesus Christ. Upon his return, he went to Brigham Young University and graduated with a Bachelors in Film and Television Production.
Scott married the love of his life, Doris Dee Fujii on November 22, 1980 in the Salt Lake Temple. Being a diehard BYU fan, Scott loved the fact that he married his wife, a U of U graduate, on Rival Football Game Day and enjoyed calling his home a “Housed Divided”. Scott and Doris had two daughters, Brittany and Alyson, whom he loved and treasured very much.
Scott worked for Hart Brothers Music and Guitar City before pursing his film career at Bonneville Communications, Video West and Digital Bytes. He enjoyed the variety of the film business and loved interviewing a myriad of people ranging from Mike Wallace to President George W. Bush. Another love of Scott’s was tuning pianos, which he began during his collage years and continued up until his passing. He owned his own piano tuning company, Freebairn Piano Service. For the last 7 years, Scott has enjoyed being a bus driver for Davis School District. He loved all of the students on his bus routes and took great care for their safety and wellbeing. Through all of his diverse careers, he’s enjoyed the camaraderie and friendship of his colleagues.
Scott was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He felt honored in serving whatever calling he was asked to serve in, from Bishopric member to Scout Master. Just like his father Mel, Scouting was his great love, despite having only daughters. He received his Eagle Scout Award and Order of the Arrow.
Scott enjoyed playing keyboard in his rock bands Flashback and Freebairn & Friends. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and his two grandsons. He was so very proud of all of them.
Scott is survived by his wife, Doris; daughters Brittany (Brandon) Knighton and Alyson Freebairn; grandsons Hyrum and Caleb Knighton; siblings Kevin (Lynn) Freebairn, Todd (Mechele) Freebairn, Eric (Nancy) Freebairn, Dana (Carol) Freebairn and Christie (Keith) Perry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Freebairn and Jacquelyn Tichenor.
