In Sri Lanka, he began work in 1949 as an Agricultural Instructor in the Department of Agriculture of Ceylon (as Sri Lanka was then known) and after a dedicated and productive tenure of thirty-seven years, retired as a Deputy Director in the same department. After retirement, he worked as a consultant for the U.S. Agency for International Development and the FAO. He travelled widely related to work, sometimes in his capacity as a seed-rice expert, visiting the U.S. back in 1960, and countries such as the Philippines, India, Netherlands, Australia, Western Samoa and China.
He is survived by his loving wife, Hema, who was his constant companion since 1963, and his four sons Charles Hemantha (Jacksonville, FL), Charles Anura (Salt Lake City, UT), Charles Rohitha (Sandy, UT), Charles Ajith (Germany), and their spouses Aloka, Chethika, Madhu – Pushpanjali, and Dani. His visits to the U.S. were especially made to see his grand-daughters – Sievalee, Sanduni, Helashi, Manischa, and Himaschi – and his grand-sons – Sajith and Dulain, and he made sure to stop by Germany and see his grand-daughter Maya, who will all miss their Aththa a lot.
