Ruth Ellen Evans Mahoney returned to her Heavenly Father peacefully on September 20, 2017, while at home. She was surrounded by her family. She was born December 31, 1922, to Edmund Paul Evans and Lucretia Jane Miles Evans in Idaho Falls, Idaho, an only daughter with 4 brothers. She attended Salt Lake City schools and graduated from East High and the University of Utah. She married Charles Mont Mahoney April 30, 1943, in the LDS Salt Lake Temple. After WW II they lived in Salt Lake and then built a home in Mount Olympus Park where she has lived for 67 years. She was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in many callings: president and a teacher in Relief Society, Young Women and Primary, and in many Stake organizations. She also served as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple. She served an LDS mission to Ireland with her husband Mont. She supported Mont in his service as a Scout leader by spending many nights alone while he camped or attended other Scouting activities. She often called herself a “Scout Widow”. She loved and served her family all her life. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy and center of her life. She made quilts for each of them, and for many others. She faithfully wrote weekly letters to every missionary in her family. She was a good neighbor and always was aware of the needs of others. She often took food, fresh fruit from her trees, jams, jellies, and extended tender loving care and a listening ear to others. All knew they could call on her at any time. She taught school for Granite School district as a teacher who went into the homes of those who were ill or were unwed mothers. She served in the PTA for many years as President, Vice President and room mother. She served as one of the first guides at the Beehive House and at “This is the Place State Park”. She was a cancer survivor of 37 years, often counseling others who had cancer. Ruth is survived by her husband C. Mont Mahoney, 5 children, E. Mont (Carla) Mahoney, Connie (Ross) Jones, Merry (Ken) Jones, Jean (Steven) Hanks, and Bruce Mahoney, 23 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Robert Ray Evans and his wife Carol. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Edmund (Marie) Evans, David (Rosemary) Evans, and Creed Evans. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the Neff’s Canyon Ward, 4176 South Adonis Drive (3950 E). A viewing will be held prior to the services from 9:30-10:30 am. A viewing will also be held from 6:00-7:30 pm at the Neff’s Canyon Ward on Monday, September 25, 2017. Interment will be at Lake Hills Cemetery, 10055 South State Street, Sandy, UT.
