Ruby Whitman Smith Cornell

November 28, 1925 — December 30, 2017

Our beloved mother and grandmother, Ruby Whitman Smith Cornell, put off the mortal for immortal and returned to the loving arms of our Heavenly Father on December 30, 2016.

Ruby was born to Sarah Whitman and William Wallace Smith on November 28, 1925, the third of six children. She attended East High. She met her eternal sweetheart, T Paul Cornell, shortly after World War II and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity June 7, 1946. They have three children, Kathryn, Wallace Paul (Wally) and Eileen.

Ruby was a loving and devoted mother. Raising her children was her primary focus. Later, she helped raise grandchildren as well.

Ruby loved music throughout her life. She often sang alto in ward and stake choirs. She encouraged the musical talent in her children and grandchildren, and supported them in lessons and school music programs. Her home was often full of good music, whether from someone practicing or from the radio or record albums.

A natural teacher, Ruby spent many years in the schools, first as a substitute teacher in Wellington, then a parent-helper at The Columbus School with her son Wally. Later, she worked as a speech therapist in Granite District. Her final school was Hartvigson School for children with special needs. Ruby has a special love for children with special needs, especially those in her family – her son Wally and grandson John had Muscular Dystrophy.

Most of all, Ruby has  a deep love for the gospel and her Savior, Jesus Christ. She shared her testimony freely, with her family and in many church teaching callings, and she left a legacy of her faith and integrity.

Ruby is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her dear husband Paul, son Wally, and grandson John Millsap. She is survived by daughters Kathryn (Richard) Luke and Eileen (Norm) Millsap, grandchildren Jason Waugh, Heather (Jeff) Dunway, and Julia (Drew) Nielson, and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at the Memorial Lake Hills Mortuary, 10055 S State Street, Sandy Utah, Thursday, January 5 at 2:00 pm with a viewing starting at 1:00. Interment to follow at Lake Hills Memorial Park Cemetery.
