Ronald Hanson

March 9, 1941 — March 26, 2018

Ronald Boyd Hanson, devoted spouse, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend, 77, passed away on March 26th, 2018 due to a brain injury suffered from a fall. He was born on March 9, 1941, to William Marcellus Hanson and Hertha Rasmussen Hanson. Ron grew up in a loving home in St. Anthony, Idaho, remaining close to his siblings his entire life. As a boy, he loved dogs and had many. He also enjoyed fishing, and pheasant and duck hunting.
Ron began his strong, lifelong work ethic while young, including helping on potato farms and working for the U.S. Forest Service. Ron graduated from South Fremont High School and attended Utah State University, where he received a degree in civil engineering. He served two years as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the New England States Mission. Ron was sealed for time and all eternity to Patricia (Pat) Higgins in the LDS Salt Lake Temple on September 17, 1965. After college, Ron and Pat moved to La Crescent, Minnesota for his training with Trane Inc. While there, their first child, Heidi, was born. In December of 1967, Ron’s small family moved to Alhambra, California, where he worked initially for Trane, followed by a steel fabrication company, and later Dennis Griffith Construction, a home remodeling business.
Ron and Pat bought their first home in Santa Ana, California. While living there, their son, Bobby, was born. The summer of 1972, Ron moved his family back to Pat’s home town, Salt Lake City, where they bought a home in the Sugarhouse area. This is where he embarked on his 35-year career working for Alder Construction, starting out as a superintendent overseeing the building of highway bridges, and concluding as their chief purchasing agent. All of Ron’s training and work experience motivated him to build his family a house in Sandy, Utah. This is the home his children grew up in, and where he and Pat have remained since the summer of 1978, moving there when their youngest son, Eric, was 15 months old. Although he had several church callings, he served most often as a ward clerk for seven bishops. Work did not stop after retirement; Ron always had a project, never missing an opportunity to swing a hammer, whether it was for his rental property, his own home, his children’s homes, or helping out a friend. Ron made friends easily; he could engage about anyone in conversation and then talk their ears off. He truly cared about others, often going out of his way to help them by fixing things, giving them money, or providing them a job to help them support themselves.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; his three children, Heidi Marie (Steve) Haymore, Robert (Bob) Boyd (Michelle), and Eric William (Bethany); eight loving grandchildren, Shawn, Gabe and Kristina Haymore; Tyler, Zach, Aaron, Izabel, and McKenna Hanson; his sisters, Glaydis Cordon and Lynda Hansen; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marcel and Hertha, his brother, Terrance (Terry); and his nephew, Jeffrey Hansen.
A viewing will be held on Friday, March 30, from 6 to 8 PM, and again on Saturday, March 31, from 11 AM to Noon at the Willow Creek 3rd Ward LDS meetinghouse, 2400 East Alta Canyon Drive (8600 South) Sandy, Utah. The funeral will be held Saturday, March 31, at 12:30 PM in the 3rd Ward building. A graveside service will follow at Memorial Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 East Bengal Blvd, Cottonwood Heights, Utah.
