Roger Wayne Gylling

December 10, 1932 — May 4, 2022

Born, Dec. 10, 1932 in Alamosa, Colorado to R. Helmer and Mattie Lucille Schneider Gylling. He lived, owned and farmed the San Luis Ranch west of La Jara Colorado. Main crops were Moravian malt barley, potatoes, garden peas, and head lettuce. 1929/1963. Sold to the LDS Church in 1963.
At 14 years old he played football and baseball in the Young America League in Denver and won both football and baseball City Championships, undefeated in 1946. He played quarterback and linebacker on the Bombers. He loved boxing. He was the all-time boxing champion in Denver from 3-9 grade. He was later in 1950, a Regimental Boxing Champion at the New Mexico Military Institute.
Roger married Shirley VonForell in the Manti Temple on July 6, 1962. They had six children and 11 grandchildren. Roger served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in many callings, including Stake High Counselor, two Bishoprics, Stake and Ward Executive Secretaries, ward clerk, Sunday School and Priesthood Teacher, Activities Planner and was always a 100 percent Home Teacher.
He attended school in La Jara, Co, Alhambra, Calif, Denver, Co, and New Mexico Military Institute where he was chosen Best New Cadet of the year and so obtained the rank of Sergeant. He graduated Alamosa High School 1952.
He served in the US Navy 1952-1956 where he attended Machinist MR School and served on the USS Wasp CVA-18 Aircraft Carrier for 3 ½ years and earned the rank of MR 2nd Class Petty Officer. Korean War Veteran.
After the Navy he worked as a machinist for Rocketdyne in Canoga Park, California as well as three other corporations in Denver; Merrill Engineering Laboratories, Hathaway Instrument Corp, and Denver Metals and Chemicals. He attended some college at CSU and BYU and graduated from Colorado Institute of Art in 1960. Later attended LA Art Center.
He worked as a designer and commercial artist at the Mtn. States Telephone Co., Kistler’s Printing Division and Werner Publishing Corp. in Santa Monica, California where he was a art director, designer and production artist of Plane & Pilot and Airways magazines and Golf & Club magazine.
He then worked 28 years for the Corporation of the President and CES Publishing and Printing Departments as an art director, designer, illustrator, and production artist for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Producing magazines, scriptures, lesson manuals, etc.. During retirement he illustrated and produced a Children’s Book of Mormon Reader and Coloring Book, that he gave freely to some 21,000 children around the world in English and Spanish.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Lee and Dwight, daughters Lynnette and Shawna and son David. Survived by wife of almost 60 years, sister Marlo Peters, daughters Valerie (Gerry) Holman, Renae Gylling (Dary Cruz), and son Ben, and grandchildren Mitchell (Maren), Brooklynn, Jared (Cami), Kasey, Madeline, Jordan, Samantha, Landon, Brylee, Briella, and Brinley.

A family Chapel service at Redwood Memorial Estates will be held Tuesday May 10th, 2022 at 1:00 pm. Viewing before starting at 11:30am. Following the Chapel service will be Military Honors held at the Graveside. Luncheon to follow. Friends and Family welcomed to join.
