Roger Jeffery Childs

October 22, 1957 — March 13, 2022

Roger Jeffery Childs passed away as a result of complications from Parkinson’s disease at the age of 64 on March 13, 2022, in Salt Lake City, UT. He was born on October 22, 1957, to Roger and Melba Childs in Salt Lake City, UT.
Roger’s life started with extraordinary difficulty as he was born with such physical ailments that doctors proclaimed that it was miraculous that he survived the NICU and was able to finally make it home. Doctors told his mother, Melba, “if he makes it past 5 years of age, he will live a healthy life.” He went on to live a fulfilling life, blessing all those with whom he came in contact.
Roger was a talented person excelling in sports, art and music in his youth. All his loved ones knew of his love for the Denver Broncos and the University of Utah football team. He continued to sing and over the years sang in many bands, performing and recording music, including several loved ones’ weddings. He continued to record music right up until his final years. Everyone who knew him knew of his love of music and enjoyed his beautiful singing voice.
Roger was a light in this world and in the world of any that knew him. He seemed to be the life of any party and could light up any room with his smile, his laugh, and his infectious sense of humor. If you knew him, you laughed with him!
Roger was a great friend. His loyal friendship and loving, kind nature attracted many to him and as such made many meaningful friendships over the years. Any that can count him a friend surely count themselves better for having had him in their lives.
Roger was a source of laughter, kindness, and joy to his family. Every family get together was marked with his laughter. He was a dedicated grandfather. He routinely visited his grandchildren no matter where in the country they lived and no matter what the personal cost to himself. He spent time playing music with his grandkids, playing card games, telling jokes, and singing songs. In fact, over the years, his grandchildren learned the lyrics to many Michael McDonald, ZZ top, Steely Dan, and Earth, Wind, and Fire songs, among those from many other of Roger’s favorite bands. Some of his son’s and his grandkids’ favorite memories are blasting music in the car and singing along with Grandpa while on road trips to many different fun places. They will miss singing with Grandpa, but his song will live in all our hearts.
Roger’s life touched the life of so many. It is impossible to know how big of an impact his life has had and will continue to have, and it is completely astounding to think that he almost didn’t make it home from the hospital after coming into this world. He will surely be missed by all who were part of his life, but we know he is resting from his troubles with those family, friends, and loved ones who have passed before him. May his smile, his laughter, his funny nicknames, songs, kindness, and love live forever in our hearts.
Roger is survived by his mother Melba Childs; his brother Gregory Childs; his sister Amanda Barney; his son, Cassidy Jeffery Childs; his beloved grandchildren; his soulmate Jill Thompson; and many other loved ones.
A private family gathering, and viewing will be held on Friday, March 18, 2022, at Memorial Lake Hills Mortuary.
