Roger Fay Roberts
“Bompa”

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend slipped out of our lives on February 9, 2020. He was a kind and willing person, helping anyone in need. He was born May 12, 1933 in Richfield, Utah. He was the son of Heber Fay Roberts and Maize Hansen. He graduated from South High School and the University of Utah in Accounting. He served in the California Mission from 1953-1955. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1962. He was a Clerk Typist for a General in South Korea. He was provided the same luxurious food as the Army General, which ignited his love for food. During this time, Roger also had a house boy who polished his shoes and washed his clothes. He also traveled to Japan and loved the Japanese children, which ignited his love for travel.
After he came home, he met his future wife, Nina Marie Benjamin, at the University of Utah. They married on June 12, 1959 in the Salt Lake Temple.
In the mid 1980s, he held his favorite job as an auditor and controller working for a propane company called Suburban Propane/Van Gas. They provided him with a propane powered car which he used to travel to rural towns in the Intermountain West, such as Jackson Hole and Rock Springs, Wyoming, and Driggs, Idaho. After retiring, he started his own insurance agency called “Affordable Insurance.” In later years, he was a crossing guard at Crestview Elementary School for thirteen and a half years; the children loved him. During this time, he was also a Greeter at Walmart at 4627 S. 900 E in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was an active member of the LDS church, serving as ward clerk, scout master, Elder’s Quorum president, and various other callings.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and traveling. Growing up, his grandfather was the Fish and Game Warden at Fish Lake and they spent many summers fishing there. He loved traveling to Lava Hot Springs, Idaho (so much so that Nina and Roger spent their first honeymoon there followed by a second honeymoon to Canada a month later). He loved exploring Yellowstone, especially during the winter on snowmobiles. He traveled to many places including cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, and Mexico. Additionally, some of his favorite trips were to New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, and San Francisco.
He loved dogs (especially pugs), planes, trains, and all types of delicious food. His beloved pug dogs were Pugins, Pugsy, Muffy, Buffy, and Tug. They were his pride and joy! He will be loved and remembered for his great sense of humor and hearty laugh; you couldn’t help but laugh with him. He had an honest and giving spirit; he lived a wholesome life. He was a great example for his family and friends His grandchildren were his delight; he loved them dearly. They called him “Bompa.” He is survived by his wife, Nina; sons, Brian and Owen; daughter, Tricia; grandchildren, Tyler 29, Tiana 26 (Ben), Toren 23, Tristin 16, and Tasia 14; sisters, Lorraine Hull and Janeane (Mike) Bowen. Preceded in death by infant son Alan, parents, and sister Marjorie Foote.
