Rodney Ylst, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2025, just days before his 72nd birthday, in South Jordan, Utah. He was born on January 25, 1953, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Hans and Annie Ylst.
Rod met the love of his life, Shelley, and within six months, he knew she was "the one." They married on June 3, 1977, and spent 47 joyful years together, building a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Rod had a brilliant and curious mind. He was a lifelong learner who loved to read, invent, and create. His entrepreneurial spirit drove him to dream big, but his greatest passion was always his family. Rod was happiest when spending time with those he loved, particularly his grandchildren. He was his granddaughter Oaklee's biggest soccer supporter, dedicating countless hours to practicing with her and cheering her on as her number-one fan. Some of his favorite moments were picking up his grandchildren Jake and Lily from school and savoring those everyday interactions that meant so much to him.
Known for his warmth and genuine curiosity, Rod had a unique ability to make everyone feel like the most important person in the world. His infectious energy lit up every room, and his positive outlook and joyful spirit drew people to him. The party never truly began until Rod walked through the door, radiating happiness and making others feel seen and valued.
Rod is survived by his loving wife, Shelley Ylst; his daughter, Annie Stagg, and son-in-law, Jamie Stagg; his son, Eric Ylst, and daughter-in-law, Kate Ylst; and his adored grandchildren, Oaklee Stagg, Jake Ylst, and Lily Ylst. He is also survived by his sister, Marjo Beckstead, and brother, Paul Ylst.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Annie Ylst; his son, Brandon Ylst; and his brother, Hansje Ylst.
