Robert William Rich passed away at the age of 84 on Monday April 4th, 2016 while participating in one of his favorite past times, working. Bob worked for many years at Hansen Stone Quarries. There he cut and prepared stone for construction all over Utah and surrounding states. His handy-work can be found in places such as the wall surrounding the Salt Lake Temple, Jackson Lake Lodge in Grand Teton National Park, and the home he helped build for his wife Barbara Hansen (the boss’ daughter). Bob was also employed with Associated Foods for 25 years where he made many life-long friends. To keep busy and to be helpful after his retirement he worked as a caretaker for Olympus Hills and Millcreek Parks where he made many more friends over the last 16 years. Bob loved working at the parks and looked forward to springtime so he could resume his caretaker position. He had a love of the outdoors. He’d often take his grandchildren fishing at Tabiona, though it often devolved into tadpole-catching. He especially loved sitting on his front porch and watching the hummingbirds that he faithfully fed every hummingbird season. Bob also enjoyed raising and selling various kinds of birds, sharing a pre-dawn coffee with friends at Sharon’s cafe, and spending time with his family. As a proud member of the Crimson Club, Bob was a Utah Man through and through, attending almost all sporting events held at the U with his grandson.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife Barbara Hansen Rich, brothers Lester and Melvin Rich, and sister Shirley Vanleeuwen. He is survived by his four children Esther Pauline (Paula) Johnson (Steven), Christine Parker, Robert Bruce (Buzz) Rich (Adele), Scott Rich (Lynn); 15 grandchildren and their spouses; 18 great-grandchildren; and his faithful dog Chica. Bob will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
