Robert Skinner

S. Jordan, UT ~ Robert Don Skinner, age 63, returned to his Heavenly home November 9th, 2017. Born in SLC, UT on April 3, 1954 to Don Jess Skinner and Rosa Elizabeth Kirkman. Married forever to Susan Hargreaves on 7/7/77 in the Salt Lake Temple. Survived by his wife, Susan; Children: Elise [Terence] Wagner, Elissa, Bryce [Amber], Benjiman [Mikkel]. Grandchildren: Christopher, Connor, Collin Wagner, Braydon, Braxton, Bryson, Brennon Skinner. Siblings: Charles, Suzanne [Delwin] Price, Marijoy [Fred] Boltz. Aunt, cousins, nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by parents, grandson Caleb Wagner, and nephew Charlie Skinner.
Robert and Susan met in January 1977 through “Young Adults” in Robert’s LDS Stake when she moved into an apartment close to where she worked [Robert’s truck was used to move the few pieces of furniture Susan owned!]. They began dating and spent almost every day together after only a few weeks. Robert proposed in April [several times!], but it took Susan a couple of weeks to finally say “yes”. 7/7/77 was set as their wedding date…a date that is not easily forgotten! They were married in the Salt Lake Temple [celebrated 40 years this past July], then honey-mooned in Tempe, Arizona where Robert served an LDS mission. He labored for a time at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. He especially liked that part of his mission because he was able to wear a white shirt, jeans and hiking boots. He was able to run up and down the Grand Canyon in record time.
Robert and Susan lived in Woods Cross until his grandpa Kirkman passed away in December 1977, then in February 1978, they lived with his grandma Kirkman in South Salt Lake [where they met] until April when the twins, Elise and Elissa were born. They moved into their first home in West Valley City in June 1978. Quite an accomplishment… two children and a house before their first wedding anniversary!
Robert served as a temple/ordinance worker in the Salt Lake, Jordan River UT and Boston, MA Temples. He and Susan enjoyed being home teaching companions and visiting the families they home taught together both in their ward and at the Legacy Branch. His knowledge of the gospel and his strong testimony strengthened those around him.
Robert loved to camp, fish and hunt with his family. He preferred the archery hunt until he was introduced to the muzzle-loader hunt. The family has many memories of camping during the archery, muzzle-loader, and rifle hunts, as well as most every holiday beginning with Easter through October. He loved Big Rock Candy Mountain, Fish Lake, Mt. Dutton/Otter Creek, Salina Canyon, and Strawberry where he had his favorite haunts.
Robert enjoyed Sci-Fi shows, sports and other outdoor activities including: baseball, basketball, football, and golf. He also enjoyed tying his own flies for fly fishing. His knowledge in the electrical field was extensive and he loved to work with wood. He finished the basement in the West Valley home and partially finished the basement in the South Jordan home.
Robert joined the Utah Highway Patrol [UHP] in October 1979, where his first assignment was the Port of Entry in Monticello, UT. Bryce joined the family in 1981, then Robert transferred to a road assignment in Delta, UT. When a position became available in Salina, UT Robert jumped at the opportunity. How he loved to patrol I-70 up and down Salina Canyon. When a position opened in Salt Lake County, the family moved back into their home in West Valley City [which they had been renting]. Benji joined the family in 1984.
From working the road, Robert transferred to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), a division of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) within the UHP which he thoroughly enjoyed. He loved to travel and as an instructor with FMCSA he saw many parts of the country. He retired from the UHP in 2004.
The children were grown and on their own, so when an opportunity came to work with the Federal government division of FMCSA [D.O.T.] in Cambridge MA, Robert could not let that pass. He convinced Susan to move back East with him, and off they went.
It was an exciting time for Robert and Susan to be on their own. They visited Church history sites as well as Country history sites. They missed their family deeply, so after four years in Massachusetts, in December 2007 they moved back to their home in South Jordan. Robert worked in the Utah office of the FMCSA until 2015 when due to health issues he retired.
He loved being with his family. He loved to be around and spend time with his grandchildren. Yellowstone was an annual event with family [sometimes several times a year!]. In fact, he loved it so much that he and Susan worked there for an entire summer, from May to October, in 2010.
Camping, fishing, and hunting was still a part of life, and a trip to Otter creek in October was one of the last trips Robert was able to take.
He was a great provider to his family. He is a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend to all that know and love him. We miss him but are comforted by knowing that we will be together and see him again!
Funeral services: Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 11:00 am at the River Ridge 3rd Ward 1244 W. Chavez Dr. (9700 S) South Jordan, Utah 84095. Viewing at church: Monday 6-8 pm; Tuesday 10-10:45 am prior to service. Interment: Mountain View Memorial Park, 3115 E. 7800 S. Cottonwood Heights, UT 84121.
