Robert S. Connell

Robert Samuel Connell Jr passed away quietly Saturday, August 24th,  after a brief stay at Sandy Health & Rehab Center. He was born to Robert and Clara Lynch Connell August 19, 1936 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Robert had one sister, Lena, who retired from the Pentagon a few years ago. He attended local schools and graduated with 17 classmates. Getting his driver’s license in August, he started driving the school bus in September of his senior year. After graduation he worked in construction for two years building houses and doing roofs with his father. Following that, he moved to Washington, DC and worked for the FBI in the fingerprint division. He left the FBI and went into the army, doing his basic training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. Then back to DC where he managed a parking garage. In the apartment across the hall was a little red-haired teacher named Ann Thomas who definitely caught his eye. They were married in 1960 and had two children, Robert Charles and Barbara Ann. His next job was with the National Bank of Washington. With a growing family, he took on a second job, working for a fuel oil company. Family vacations frequently took them west, touring many of our beautiful national parks and riding roller coasters. They got their Winnebago and started putting the miles on it during their summer vacations. After 17 years at the bank, and vacationing in the west, they decided to look for a job out here. Zion Bank offered him a job, which he took for about 2 years, then moved to Valley Bank which became Valley National, then Bank One and eventually Chase Bank.
Ann passed away in December, 1991 after being diagnosed with incurable cancer in April of that year. Son Bobby married and eventually had four children, and daughter Barbara married a few years after her mother’s passing. Robert retired in December of 1996.
Robert continued his traveling. He’s visited every state, and has driven in all but Alaska. While visiting one of his old roommates from the FBI years, he met Barbara. Whenever he visited his buddy in Virginia, they invited Barbara for dinner. After several years, they started visiting by phone, and more frequent visits. Eventually they decided to marry. Their blended families get along well. After Barbara retired, they got to travel together. They have children in NC, VA, TX, and Utah, so they always have places to visit. Between them, they have 8 grandchildren and 2 great grands. Life has been good!
A  memorial  service will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, August 30, 2019, at Memorial Murray Mortuary, 5850 South 900 East, Murray, UT. A family and friends gathering will be held one hour prior to the memorial service.
