Robert Douglas (“Doug”) McDougall, Sr.
1925 – 2014
Passed from this earth November 4, 2014 at age 88. Born November 17, 1925 in Tasmania, Australia. He is the youngest of seven children born to, John Henry McDougall and Elsie Gertrude Hay. He married Bettie Lenore Woolley September 21, 1943.
He served in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II, and then became active in community affairs and involved in local politics. Always full of energy, Doug loved boxing and bike riding, and rode competitively into his eighties. Doug was an entrepreneur who owned retail appliance and television businesses in both Australia and Utah. A life-long salesman with a genuine interest in people, Doug was also a realtor for more than 30 years in the Salt Lake Valley.
He was an active member of the L.D.S. church and held many leadership positions. As a new convert, he was called to preside over a small congregation who quickly responded to his energy and the Church in Tasmania saw rapid growth under his leadership. Doug became a powerful preacher, a dynamic organizer and a greatly admired teacher who was always looking to help those in distress. After immigrating to the United States in 1970, Doug and Bettie lived in Salt Lake City, Murray and Sandy, Utah. Doug loved to travel and visited almost every country in the world.
Preceded in death by his wife Bettie, his son Robert, four grandchildren, his parents, and all of his siblings. Doug is survived by an adoring family – children, Dianne (Ross) Egbert of Ogden Utah and Wayne (Theresa) McDougall of Boston Massachusetts. Cherished by sixteen grandchildren,¬ thirty-five great grandchildren, and many extended family members in Australia.
Funeral services will be held Friday, November 7, 11 am at Sandy Crescent South Stake Center, 275 East 10600 South. Visitation before on Friday November 7 from 10-11 am prior to services at the Ward. Interment at Lake Hills Memorial in Sandy.
