Robert Firmage died early on April 18, 2019 from a heart condition. He was born on September 17, 1944, in Salt Lake City, where he spent most of his life. The eldest child of Andrew Darrell and Hilda Rickenbach Firmage, he was an accomplished student and teacher, dedicated to understanding and expanding meaning in our lives.
A lover of philosophy, poetry, and language, he wrote and translated many books. Robert received a Ph.D. from the University of Utah, where he taught for years, riding his beloved bicycles whenever possible. A lover of animals, he and his wife Gertrud rescued and cared for numerous cats, dogs, and other animals through the years, all of which he cherished as family.
He is survived by his wife, his son Christian and three granddaughters, and his siblings Richard, Roderick, Roger, and Linda Firmage Doron. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Thomas. His granddaughters brought great joy to his later years as did also and always his beloved animal family companions.
His presence will be both missed and felt by those who loved him; it is one of those meaningful paradoxes he loved.
