Robert James Ehlers, age 90, passed away on Feb 3, 2015 due to complications after emergency surgery. Robert was born May 11, 1924 in Okanogan, Washington to Mary and William Ehlers.
Following graduation from high school he served two tours of duty in the Army Air Corps, flying bombing missions from his base in England. Little did he know that when he was bombing Dresden, the girl that would become his wife years later was a refugee there.
After his time in the service he attended Pullman University and worked in the Aerospace industry until his retirement in 1982.
In 1976 he married Ruta Dreijmanis, his loving ‘Super Chief’. They shared 39 years together. In his retirement he enjoyed golf, skiing and time in the mountains. He and Ruta traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad.
Robert is survived by his wife Ruta, daughter Lisa Ehlers (Jeff Penland) of Sunnyvale, CA., daughter Leslie Nielson of Ogden, UT., grandchildren Hailey and Mathew and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Norma; sister, Jeanette Cunz and brother Gordon.
A gathering to remember a life well lived will be held on Friday, February 13, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in the Orangerie at Red Butte Gardens.
