Robert Charles Lewis

August 14, 1922 — May 5, 2019

Robert was born August 14, 1922 in Reinbeck Wisconsin to Leonard and Hazel Lewis. He passed from this world May 5, 2019 in Sandy, Utah.
Robert grew up in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico, the fourth child of nine; Ruth, Ward, Raymond, Robert, David, Hazel, Leonard, Arthur and June. He was a Forest Ranger’s son. I am told they were a rowdy bunch.
Robert was an amazing man and a great man; a beautiful husband, father, grandfather, friend and human being. He was generous, grateful, humble, compassionate man and he deeply loved his family and friends.
Robert was a pilot and a navigator during World War II. He was stationed in England and flew over the English Channel searching for German submarines. Robert stayed in the reserves until his retirement at age 65. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander.
As he raised his family, Robert worked at L. H. Strong Motor Company. Robert was a Past Grand Master and Past Grand Patriot of the Utah Odd Fellows Lodge and his sweetheart Ginny, was a Past President of the Utah Rebecca Assembly. They spent much of their lives dedicated to charitable pursuits.
He loved camping and fly fishing. Our family would spend a week every year with cousins and friends in the High Uintas camping, fly fishing during the day and sitting by the campfire at night. He also loved his garden. It was about an acre that he rototilled up to his 93rd birthday.
He met Geneva (Ginny) Nicholl as he was graduating from the Naval Academy. Her brother, Stewart, was his roommate. They married on February 3, 1943 just before he went off to war. Theirs was a lifetime romance. They always held hands and kissed goodbye, hello, and goodnight. They worked hard and were amazing parents.  They had three children Steven Robert Lewis, Vicki Ann Lewis Casady Clough/Kurt Shingler and Martin Charles Lewis. These kids had 13 grandchildren: Boyd/Brenda Casady, Kierstin Tafoya, Payge/Patrick Christensen, Bob Lewis, Dayna/Todd Schwartz, Tori/Trevor Olson, Zach/Michelle Clough, Emily/Kyle Christensen, Ryan/Becky Lewis, Ashlee/Jared Smith, Skyler Lewis, Danny Lewis and Tayler/Meghan Khater.  And, these kids produced 28 Great Grandchildren: Ryleigh, Lilly, Makenna, Chaz/Karli, Keegan, Indigo, Sadie, Toby, Sam, Keaton, Seth, Morgan, Kendon, Calin, Alexandra, Kaiden, Caylee, Roman, Cambree, Brecklyn, Grayson, Ashton, Kenra, Harrison, Ian, Josephine and Michael.  All healthy and beautiful children!
He loved his littles. We gathered as a family almost monthly and he would say over and over how fortunate we were to have such a great family.  He called the girls his “Sweeties” and the boys his “Buddies”. He taught us all the importance of family and connection.
Robert is preceded in death by his sweetheart Ginny, son Steven, grandson Skyler, and siblings Ruth, Ward, Raymond, Dave, Arthur, father Leonard, and mother Hazel.
We are all blessed and very grateful to have had the Dad and Grandpa that everyone should have had.  He always put his family first. He loved unconditionally and with support, humor and passion. He will be remembered with love and gratitude and he will be missed!
Robert Charles Lewis was a truly Great Man!
