Robert Huhl Blackhurst, age 90, was born March 11, 1925 in Salt Lake City, UT to Edwin and Esther Blackhurst. He died on April 6, 2015 peacefully at home. He married Virginia Robinson on December 16, 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple.
He served in the Navy from 1944-1946. He was an Aviation Metalsmith 3rd class on the USS Vicksburg CL 96.
He graduated from the University of Utah on June 13, 1950 and worked in education. His most beloved job during his career was assistant principal. He worked at South High School, 1960-74. He also was at West High School, 1974-1982 and retired from there.After retirement he volunteered as a chaplain with Salt Lake City Police Dept. He enjoyed being a docent with the Utah State Historical Society and a Utah Symphony docent for 5th grade elementary students.His church services included high councilor, bishop’s counselor, bishop, counselor in a stake presidency, and temple ordinance worker. He and his wife, Virginia, served a temple mission in the Washington DC Temple, 1992-1993.He is survived by wife, Virginia; children, Mark (Chris), Debby (Cody) Crider, Janice (Roland) Ruegner, Doug (Elaine), Leslie (Dwayne) Bolton, 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by both parents, grandson Jeffrey Allen Blackhurst, sister Joan Spencer.Thanks to all who came to support and help with loving care. Funeral Services will be held Monday, April 13, 2015 at 11:00 am, at the Winder 8th Ward, 1361 East 4000 South. Viewings will be held Sunday from 6-8 pm at Holladay-Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 S Highland Drive and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment at Salt Lake City Cemetery.
