Richard Shepherd

April 27, 1936 — October 15, 2019

Richard Lawrence Shepherd, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on October 15, 2019 at the age of 83. He was born on April 27, 1936 to Augustus Shepherd and Margaret Derrick. He married Janis Sharon Hoskings on July 17, 1959.
Richard (Dick to his friends and family) had a passion for western folklore and the outdoors. As a boy he loved cars and Triumph motorcycles. As a senior he loved model trains. He served in the US Navy during peacetime as a radioman. He was patriotic and always honored the veterans who served during wartime with fierce admiration and respect. Richard started on the manufacturing line of Sperry and rose to become a senior executive for Sperry-Univac. He traveled the world and managed the manufacturing of leading-edge technology in Australia, Mexico, Texas, and most importantly Ephraim Utah. In Fairview, Utah, while managing the Ephraim plant he honed his passion for horses, raising cattle (mainly as pets to suit his wife’s sensibilities), and riding John Deere lawnmowers. His family will remember him most for his infectious smile, surprisingly boyish face through most of his life, and his embracing the role of grandfather in his later years. Through all his trials and tests in life, he was fiercely loyal and true. He always supported his family. As recently as two weeks ago, he expressed to the hospice staff how proud he was of his family. May you rest in peace beloved husband, father, and grandfather. You have run your race. You have finished your course.
Richard is survived by his wife, Janis Sharon Hoskings, sister, Judy Faulk, and his brother, Robert Shepherd. He leaves behind a legacy of 5 children, Paul Shepherd (Marlene), Boyd Shepherd (Rachel), Cory Shepherd (Miriam), Kevin Shepherd (Corrinne), and Karie Shutt (Randy). He has 28 grandchildren, and 40 great grandchildren.
As his family, we honor his sacrifice in our behalf as he leaves us. Our dad hated funerals and viewings. We will have a mercifully short graveside service honoring his request for simplicity and brevity. Those who wish to attend are invited. The graveside service will be held Saturday, October 26 at 3 PM at Memorial Lake Hills Mortuary and Cemetery located at 10055 State Street, Sandy, Utah.
