Ecclesiastes 3: To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die.
Richard Scott VonNiederhausern was born on April 18, 1938, in Logan, Utah to Alma and Cornelia Wilhelmina DeWaal VonNiederhausern, the fourth of thirteen children. He grew up in Logan. He attended schools in Logan. He often talked about walking to and from Adams Elementary school. He graduated from Logan High School in 1956. He served faithfully in the Netherlands Mission from 1960 to 1962. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965 stationed in Germany as an MP. He was always proud of his military service. When he had leave time he traveled around Europe. In later years whenever Esther expressed a desire to go to Europe, he would say, “I’ve been there. There is nothing to see.”
He married Esther Sharp from Whitney, Idaho, on April 10, 1970 in the Logan Temple. They lived in Salt Lake City and Farmington before moving to West Jordan where they lived for 40 years. The home they lived in is one Richard saw in a dream. They searched until they found it.
Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping or going to Bear Lake with his family. They spent many Saturdays driving around the mountains or out in the desert where the kids could run and yell and have fun. The only rules were don’t set anything on fire and don’t kill anyone.
He liked food. He often said he would eat anything that didn’t eat him first. He often mentioned the new foods he experienced while on his mission in Holland and Belgium. He liked things liked smoked oysters, kipper snacks or pickled pigs feet. One infamous dish was chicken noodle soup, creamed corn and pork and beans in the same pan. He said it all went to the same place anyway so why not mix it to start with.
Richard was a small appliance mechanic by trade working for Briton Electric and Dan’s Maytag for 30 years. He could fix anything. He could diagnose a problem just from someone describing the sounds it was making. Before his mission and marriage he worked for his uncle’s construction company and for Hilco plumbing in Logan. He was also good at auto mechanics and kept the family vehicles in running order. He said he learned everything he knew from Jackie Jinkerton, but we never found out who that was.
He has a great sense of humor. He liked doing wacky things to make people laugh. He could tell stories like no one else. We would laugh until we cried. He would often put a mask on to scare the kids or just growl at them until they ran to mom.
Richard had several near-death experiences: when he was four years old, he fell into the Logan River while the family was fishing; a few years later, he swallowed some gasoline and saw his spirit leave his body; as a young man he almost drowned trying to swim to shore on Bear Lake. These experiences left him with a sure knowledge that the body and spirit are separate.
He is survived by his wife Esther, sons R. Bryce (Karlene Webb), Woods Cross, Anthony J (Lauri Whitehead), Logan, Cameron E, West Jordan, daughters Melissa L (Peter H) Houston, West Jordan, LaDawn K (Jeffrey P) Vermeeren, Calgary, Canada, and daughter-in-law Kristy K (Troy W) Attridge, 23 grandchildren, brothers Cornelius, Bruce, Rudolf, Lamont, Hugh, Gordon VonNiederhausern and sisters Elizabeth Hunter.
He was preceded in death by son, Nathan S, brothers Alma and Robert VonNiederhausern and sisters Marilyn Spendlove, Sheila Loftis, and Cynthia VonNiederhausern.
We will miss Richard very much. His wisdom, his wit, his stories and the love he shared. We know we will be with him again. We know he has had a great reunion with his parents, his brothers and sisters and his son, Nathan. We look forward to the time we will all be together for eternity.
To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven: a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time for morning and a time for dancing; a time for love and a time for peace.
