Our beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather, Nick R. Hauert, age 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 in Murray, Utah.
Nick was born on July 23, 1925 in Solothurn, Switzerland to Alfred Niklaus and Hedwig Angelique Alexandrine Hauert-Landis. Nick grew up with his older brother Kurt, and younger brothers Max, and Herbert in Basel, Switzerland.
He completed Swiss primary and secondary schools, comparable to US elementary and high school, with high marks and went on to go to Business College. He also worked in the department store of the father of his best friend, Fred Feldpausch.. It was there he gained his love and keen understanding of retail business. It was through Freddie that he met his future wife, Carol, who introduced him to the LDS church.
After serving a short time in the Swiss Army Nick pursued his dreams in America. He went to work for an import/export company in NYC and attended lots of movies in his off hours to help him learn the language. He also joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) in the Manhattan, New York City Branch. At this same time he renewed correspondence with Carol who was now living with her older sister in Sacramento, California. Soon, Nick had earned enough to travel to Sacramento where he married his sweetheart, Carol, on April 16, 1948.
While he was in New York Nick received a job offer from his former employer in Switzerland so he and Carol returned. While in Basel Nick and Carol’s first child, Kathy, was born in 1950. When she was thirteen months old, the family made the ocean voyage to America and settled in Salt Lake City. Other children soon joined the family – Christine (1952), Karen (1954), Rick (1958), and finally Scott (1959).
Upon arriving in Salt Lake in the early 50’s, Nick went to work for the J.C. Penney Company (Penney’s) in a store in the Sugarhouse neighborhood. He worked for Penney’s throughout his career, rising in management positions in stores in Utah and Idaho. During his successful career, Nick earned the admiration and love of those he worked with. He received many awards from Penney’s recognizing him for his hard work, keen business acumen, and consummate skill as a manager in a tough, stressful environment. He is missed by many hundreds of former associates.
On a tragic day, March 20, 1972, Nick lost his beloved Carol to a sudden and unexpected stroke. Nick was sealed to Carol for “Time and all Eternity” with his five children kneeling beside him in the Salt Lake Temple on March 19, 1973. In September 15, 1980 he married a close associate, neighbor, and then sweetheart, Regina Loosli Terry. Each of them brought five children to the marriage, bringing the blended family to a total of ten children, with many grandchildren already born. Eventually this number would rise to 44 grandchildren (42 surviving), 88 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Nick moved into Regina’s larger home, all of three streets away from his own, where they lived together in love for many years until downsizing to a smaller home in the Three Fountains community in Murray, Utah where he lived until his death.
Nick and Regina served two missions in the Swiss LDS Temple, one in the Presidency as a counselor, and a third mission in the Preston England Temple. After returning to Salt Lake, the couple served for many years in the Salt Lake City Temple of the LDS Church. Nick was set apart as a Sealer and, as such, was able to officiate at the wedding and sealing of several of his grandchildren.
Nick remained true to his faith and testimony of his Savior and Friend, Jesus Christ until his death. His family has faith that their husband, father, and grandfather continues to serve joyfully and faithfully on the “other side of the veil” with family members and friends who preceded him in death, helping to build the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
Nick is survived by his brothers Kurt, Max (Margarite), and Herbert (Mädi), his wife, Regina, his children, Kathy (Donald) Gifford, Christine (Benjamin) Marcoe, Karen (Garry) Graham, Rick (Lillie) Hauert, and Regina’s children, Kirk (Nancy) Terry, Rod (Beverly) Terry, Craig (Meredith) Terry, Steve (Kathie) Terry, Shellie (Jeff) Jensen. Nick was preceded in death by his parents, brother Peter, first wife, Carol, his son, Scott Hauert, and grandsons Jacob Hauert and Bryan Terry.Service Information
