On July 5, 2022 Richard Kunio Matsuda, 98, passed away in Taylorsville, Utah. Born to Kanji and Ei (Shirayama) Matsuda (Salt Lake City, 1924), Richard grew up helping on the family farm with his sisters (Taeko Yoshida, Ruth Hino, May F. Matsuda, Elsie Doi, Eva Aoki) and brother, Karl.
Richard graduated from Granite High School, played as second baseman and left fielder for the Bussei baseball team and enjoyed spending time with friends. For over 40 years he owned and operated his business, Dick’s Box Company, recycling produce boxes for local farmers. He worked nearly every day, some years taking off only Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Extended family gatherings were a big part of his life. Major holidays found the Matsuda family having cookouts or dining out together as a group. These events, which at times included over 15 nieces and nephews, were always a lot of fun. Richard enjoyed trout fishing in the Uinta mountains with his family, rooting for the Jazz and playing the slot machines in
Wendover.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife, May (Mitsuko Tsukamoto), to whom he was married for over 50 years. He is survived by his three children, Todd and Lisa Matsuda (Damon Papac), Michelle Williams and five grandchildren: Cheryl, Mariah, Breighton, Jack and Nicole.
Richard’s family thanks the staff of Truewood by Merrill (Taylorsville) for their care and support over the past two years as well as the Canyon Hospice aides and practitioners who provided supplemental care during his last couple of months.
Friends are invited to join the family for an informal gathering at the Salt Lake City Cemetery to bid farewell.Service Information
