Richard Herman Grappendorf
June 17, 1939- July 27, 2016
(AKA: “Chef Ricardo Grappini”, “The Rascal”, “Rich”, “Dad”, “Pop”, “Grandpa”, “Sweetheart” and “Honey”)
Richard was a renaissance man and 77 years old when on July 27, 2016 after suffering pancreatic and lung cancer, and other complications, he completed his mission on earth. He was born June 17, 1939 in Waterloo, Iowa to Herman Wilhelm and Edith (Eda) Viola Snyder Grappendorf. He is survived by his wife, Deonne (Dee) Elizabeth Bailey, seven children: Kathy Lynn (Keith) Hill, Cindy Lynn (Robert) Adams, Daniel Richard Grappendorf (Stephanie Colamier), Mathew Arnold (Pamela G. Meadows) Grappendorf, Lisa Aileen (David) Caroon, Derrel William (Magen Cunningham) Grappendorf, and Heidi Lynn Slack (Rodrigo Ramirez-Ortiz); 27 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; two sisters: Joan Joyce (Charles) Thomas, Carol Ann Wells; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Daniel Austin Grappendorf.
Before graduating from West High School in Waterloo, Iowa, he was employed as a draftsman at Engineered Equipment Corp, and after graduation, at Rath Meat Packing Plant. He attended Brigham Young University initially studying Chemical Engineering. As his interests changed he focused on a bachelors and advanced degrees in Zoology/Ecology at University of California, Davis and Brigham Young University. Ironically it was not this field that opportunities would come to make a living and provide for his family. Rather, through undeniable blessings from the lord, it was engineering.
During the years that followed he experienced many diverse, challenging and fascinating employment opportunities, especially in the latter half of his life when he worked mainly as a contract engineer. John Deere Research & Engineering Center offered him experience as a designer. Other opportunities came with Christensen Diamond & Research, Hoj Engineering and Hercules, working on everything from rocket boosters, oil drill bit designs (where he was awarded numerous US and foreign patents), and the docking system for the chandeliers at Salt lake Symphony Hall. After retirement, he found great interest in cooking, researching gastronomy, then preparing original recipes for unique dinners; and study and research of the Civil War especially music of the Civil War where he discovered the fascinating 6th verse of Julia Ward Howe’s Battle Hymn of the Republic.
It was during his second year at BYU that he met his sweetheart, Deanne Elizabeth Bailey. She waited for him 2-1/2 years while he served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of latterday Saints in Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria. Upon his return they became engaged and were married July 5, 1963 in the Idaho Falls Temple. They recently celebrated their 53 wedding anniversary.
Richard’s activity in the Church has included 16 years as a seventy (one of his favorite calling), serving as a stake missionary, including one with his wife; Gospel Doctrine Teacher, High Councilor, High Priest Group Teacher, and serving in 2 Bishoprics.
The family wishes to thank Quality Hospice for their excellent end-of-life care. Their Doctor and all the nurses exceptionally understood and went out of their way to give prompt medical treatments and needed empathetic support and care. Also, he wants to thank his family, especially his wife, for their devotion and love, without which he would have suffered so much more.
