Richard G. Mitchell
1936 – 2021
Richard “Mitch” grew up in Cash Point, Tennessee. He was raised on a sharecroppers farm as one of 14 brothers and sisters. After some time they were able to purchase a family farm on the Tennessee/ Alabama border where he worked hard from a young age picking cotton. Truly a depression era baby, Richard learned the value of hard work and providing for others. At the age of 18 he moved west where a few of his brothers worked in construction to make “good money”. Should we say he was a regular James Dean – white tee shirt with cigarettes rolled up in the sleeve and a cool Chevy Bel Air. People would always ask him where he got his accent from which he had all throughout his life, his answer was “Southern Utah.”
His southern boy charm led him to meet and marry the love of his life. He and Carol eloped to the major metropolis of Carlin, Nevada in ‘62. Soon thereafter his sons Todd and Gary were born in Salt Lake City. He continued on with his hard work in construction as part of Iron Workers Local 27 to provide for his family. While he had a few of the “good jobs” on tall skyscrapers in downtown Salt Lake, most of the work led him to exotic places like Moab, Delta, Kemmerer WY and Kennecott Copper in Magna.
Richard lived most of his life in Holladay, Utah where he raised his family and enjoyed many friendships and great neighbors. His family life grew with his granddaughters Morgan and Brooke who he loved so much.  They brought incredible joy to his life.
Richard lost Todd in ‘91 and Carol in ‘08 – both much too soon.  After his retirement we came to learn of his diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia which greatly complicated his life. He moved into Capitol Hill Senior Living where they went above and beyond to help him in his senior years. His dementia progressed slowly over many years but he never lost his work ethic or southern charm. We are so thankful to all the medical professionals, caretakers, family and friends that were so kind, helpful and loving towards Richard.
Dad/ Pa – we will greatly miss your many efforts to provide for us, kindness and love.
