Reinhardt Bsumek

June 10, 1942 — April 22, 2021

Reinhardt Bsumek, our father, husband, brother, grandfather and step-father passed away suddenly in St. George, Utah on April 22, 2021 after a brief illness at 78 years old.
Reinhardt was born in Elbing, East Prussia, Germany on June 10, 1942 during World War II.  After the war he escaped what was then East Germany to Nuertingen, West Germany where he lived with his parents and three siblings in one room of the Forest Service office for five years as they waited for their turn to immigrate to the United States.  They arrived in their new home in New York City in January 1952 after a 2-week journey on the ship Neptunia.
After moving to Salt Lake City, Utah Reinhardt met Marjorie Hughes and they married (later divorced) and together had one son, Eric.  He later married Karen Newman Bramble.  They loved each other dearly.
Reinhardt loved life and truly lived.  He loved music and the outdoors and after moving to Utah became an avid tennis player, cross country skier, hiker and explorer.  He loved to do these activities with his family including his grandchildren.  He was a gourmet chef and right up until he died made delicious vegetarian meals with only the freshest organic ingredients for his wife, children, grandchildren and friends.
Reinhardt attended the University of Utah where he graduated with a master’s degree in structural engineering.  In 1978 he found work with HC Hughes company, the oldest engineering firm in Utah.  In 1986, together with his partners David Mu and Bill Yadeskie, he formed BsumekMu and Associates and had an accomplished career that continued until his death including award winning projects such as the Salt Lake Olympic housing, the Hale Center Theater, a major soccer stadium in Buenos Aires and working as a structural engineering consultant on the Rome, Italy temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Reinhardt was an accomplished man by the standards of the world but the accomplishment that brought him the most joy was that of husband, father and grandfather.  Reinhardt did not ask for a big family, but when he remarried, he got one. His family of two grew to 13, and he embraced it with love.  He absolutely adored being a father and “bonus” dad, as his step-children lovingly called him, to all of his children.
His grandchildren called him Opa and adored him.  He was always there for them through their ups and downs and taught them to enjoy the very finest things life can offer.
He was a selfless man who worked hard and never hesitated to share what he had when people were in need.  His legacy is truly his family. He is survived by his wife Karen, son Eric, step (bonus) sons and daughters Diana (Tad) Stoker, James (Janalyn) Bramble, Julie Mills, Joanna (Tony) Bell, Laura (David) Kooyman, Jason (Mildred) Bramble, David (Katrina) Bramble, Steven Bramble, Lindsey (Connor) Clissold and Jessica (Levi) Greenwald. 36 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Also survived by his loving sisters Eva and Trudy (Hans, deceased) and brother Peter (Maria).  He has been reunited in heaven with his mother Ella and father Edwin.
